The trail in question is illegal yet everyone and their mother rides the trail, post youtube videos and makes comments in forums as if this is some scandal. Lol. How many petitions will it take to make an illegal trail legal? Why not legalize it?

    Heh.

Have you ever ridden this trail? Trust me when I say it's not the kind of trail you would want legalized, even if it had a remote chance. Not only are the features big and very technical but there are massive penalties for failure.

I'm stoked that Dan scored POM, regardless of the legality of the trail. Not like any of the DH in Laguna is a secret anyways. If it was, the trails wouldn't be such a blown out mess 11 months out of the year...

I see what you did there...very clever! Has that Slayer ever had such guidance? Never mind. This could get even worse in a hurry.

I am offended. I am not used to seeing pictures of Ms. Upton with her bathing suit completely on.

The trail looks gnarly but I want to at least go and check it out even if I have to walk down it......I want to see just how gnarly it is so I can watch the youtube vids of people hauling ass down it and actually know how much they kick ass for riding it that fast.

I thought this was a great quote from one of the PinkBike commenters:
"You are braking as much as the traction on your super-tacky Minions will allow you to... and your bike is still accelerating out from under you.
High five anyone that you know that can make it down it in one piece.
Be amazed by the very few that can shred it."

Thats the dance u do if u survive that trail. If it looks gnarly in pictures than its at least twice as scary when your actually there.

By trying to keep them on the low down the system of illegal trails has been working in Laguna for many years. Enforcement comes and goes but for the most part the enforcement looks the other way, until something happens or just too much bike traffic makes them start ticketing again. We have pros living in town, a bike component company based here, pro downhillers with their teams practicing in town and companies like Shimano hosting events in Laguna. If Laguna was a smaller town that relied on MTBing dollars maybe land managers would entertain opening some of those trails. Laguna does not need MTBing dollars and no one at City Hall would lift a finger to help MTB trail access. Respect the status quo in town, enjoy riding, don't loiter at trailheads and remember to keep a low profile, ride with small groups and don't bring big groups to town. Dean

Don't want to derail this too much, but a certain canyon near my house was a fun place to ride for awhile, then got featured in a couple magazines that specifically called it out and gave the location, then the place became full of shuttlers, local landowners got mad, etc. . . . now it is shuttled a lot, and the clueless still drive into the quiet neighborhoods at the top with their overblown trucks blaring their metal mullisha and whatnot.

In general, it's a good idea to keep these trails on the downlow and be immensely respectful of the access that you *do* have (e.g. non-enforcement).

Sean you raise a good point.. yes it's a bummer when sacred trails get over run by the masses, but I don't personally get the impression that the avoidance of making illegal trails public is being driven by STR for that same reason. Yes there are specific people that want to protect their trails (totally understandale and I agree completely), but to me it seems more like a "following the law' or "following the rules" type of mentality.. and that's where I start to question it because if these trails are already being poached by the masses in mass numbers, then what damage are we doing by posting a random pic on a small forum????? I mean seriously.. it's a "can't see the forest for the trees" mentality.. honestly if I or my son want to ride an off limits trail badly enough, then let me deal with my own liability of accepting the trivial cost of a ticket.. if it's actually to protect an otherwise "off the radar" low key trail, well I'm sorry but those simply don't exist any longer.. everyone knows where everything is.. the Google Earth app provides us that.. just feels like the motivation and priorities for certain enforcement are a tad out of whack!! My 2 cents.. Jim

Right? Couldn't have said it better. These trails are being used by hundreds of people a week. The whole fight club mentality is plain stupid. How long has t|€~£*s been around like 20 years now? It's really not a big deal. If the parks wanted to close it they would have by now.

    Quoted for truth.

Yes, if you've been around long enough, you'll know where these "off the grid trails" are. I used to get irritated when SMT on MTBR would spew the whole Fight Club thing, but I've come to realize he's right. Illegal trails should be talked about through PMs. I would gladly show someone an illegal trail if they hit me up for a ride. I've made videos and taken pictures of all these trails, but I don't spam the intrawebs. I did in the past, and realized it was wrong. I don't make them to show off and I don't care about going viral. My vids are for me and my buds to enjoy, which is why I haven't linked or posted my vids here. More importantly, my vids are for my 3 kids so that they can see their old man used to ride a bike, and he wasn't half bad. :)

Whereas I think it's great to schedule group rides, I think it's counter productive when you get a mass group together. Don't get me wrong, I'm for sharing the stoke. It's just that when the group rides get so big, non-mountainbikers have a negative impression of us. Right or wrong, that is the perception. Don't feed the fire.

Diesel hit it on the head.

I'm usually one for saying let the thread go, but seriously guys, there's no fight here. It's George's site, it's his policy, the end.
