Is using a regular link stronger than installing a quick link on a new chain? I never take my chain off to clean if that's a factor. Thanks.

No......once you push that pin out, then back in....it actually creates a weaker connection. The pins kind of mushroom out when they are installed in the factory.

That being said, have done it in the past....some have failed, some have not.

On the other hand, I did break a SRAM 9 Spd Quick Link a few weeks ago.

    I've broken:
    2 sram chains
    4 shimano chains
    1 KMC chain

But not one has ever broken at the quick remove link.

Same here. I have broken 3 SRAM chains on my trail bike in the last 3 years. It's almost like I should replace them at the start of every season. I don't ride too many miles, and I monitor for chain length. They fail anyway. I went with a Shimano chain this season and seeing if they are any better. Seems a waste to throw away a chain that isn't stretched.

Good info so far, thanks. I have never broken a KMC. I had one on my Santa Cruz for a year then changed it due to wear. I have one on my Kona which I'm about to change hence this thread. It's a year old and worn to about .60-.07mm. It's joined by a solid link.

That was about 700 miles on the SS. Chain was stretched, but still below the .75 to replace.

I remember those days. My SS was a chain breaking machine.
