While coaching my boys soccer game this morning, I went to kick the ball and on my weighted foot (the one not kicking) felt a sharp, painful (like I was kicked) shooting pain in my calf. I thought I heard a pop or twang (like a rubber band) but that could have been in my head. I can put weight on the leg no worries, but any and I mean any, change in my ankle position the leg simply gives out... I know this is a calf muscle issue cause I can feel it, but I have heard from the collective mom and dads at the game that it is is: a) a strain and no worries b) a cramp (no!) c) a pulled muscle and to watch for possible "pooling of blood" in the foot area due to the muscle tearing... R.I.C.E is being applied, and the advil has been taken... I figured one of us may have experianced this as it seems from the web inquires that runners, bikers and out of shape old dudes like me get em" Thoughts? No way I can ride...
go see the doctor, it could be your achilles tendon. :-k. The "pop" and the pain when moving reminds me when I ripped the tendon.
Heading to the doc tomorrow as the boy had his end of year soccer party and b-day party. Priorities Has not gotten better throughout the day.
Achilles tendon's my guess. Exact same symptoms my father in law had. Feel for a bump or depression in the tendon anywhere between the heel and the body of the calf muscle. Good Luck
Feels MUCH better today/this morning, but am still going to the doc. I am now thinking this is a pulled/torn muscle as I can put pressure on it, no swelling, lumps, depressions etc... at least I am hoping it is. Too much to do!
Keep it elevated with ice on it, or just elevated if it isn't sore. if you do a lot of sitting now it could ballon on you and get much more painful.
Closing the loop: Thanks all, got some "good" news... Just got back from the doc office... severe muscle tearing in the calf, no tendon issues and achilles is fine (Thompson Test). Main issue is internal bleeding due to the tear, so the sports doc recommended heat (3 daily - wants blood to flow), Advil (three x 2) wrapped, and movement (nothing extreme) such as moving the foot up and down to keep blood flowing. Calf feels like a watermelon. No bike or leg exercise for two weeks minimum... then a follow up check.
So, 4-6 weeks of twice the week therapy. At least I get to ride, a stationary bike at Physical Therapy... Per the follow up, 4--6 weeks no riding, moto, hiking, running etc. Here is where the torn/ripped calf muscle is... Doc called it tennis leg and normally sees it with basketball players right after a jump shot...
That sucks. I know that tear well, it hurts, and takes a while to heal. Dont rush it, and listen to the doctor. I tore my calf back in 96 in a wrestling match, it was a hideous pain
