    Curious to know...

Why would you do that? For the suspension? Thicker tires?
Most of the ride's up, right?

Hey, maybe it will snow at the higher elevations! At least that would help cut down on the traffic.

Anyone know if they would cancel due to conditions? I know most events are rain or shine, but if visibility is low and there is more traffic than usual, it might make it unsafe.

    Hmm
Rain (and possible snow at the 8000ft level)....on a curvy slick road with more traffic and bikes than usual.
No sure that would be much fun. I'm planning to do it but if conditions are going to be bad I may sit this one out.

I feel much more stable and safe climbing and descending in nasty weather on my mountain bike than I do on 23c road tires & bike.

According to their website, a few years back they postponed it because of a threatened rain storm. I'd almost rather have it be a little wet than hot. Saturday is still a long way off.

What?!? I'd rather it be 90 outside and sunny than dark and rainy. I know I have trouble seeing sometimes when it is raining and I am sure most other people do too (especially if it is really pouring).

The operative words were "a little wet". If it's 90 degrees, I won't be seeing anything. I'll be passed out.

Well my "Patron"...took a header in the Fog at Wildflower this weekend re-bruised already injured shoulder and ribs and thus is out for BA. I was to be his domestic so now I am Ronin... well just master-less I am far from being a warrior at this point, and acutely unmotivated, but I will show up and have fun if I have to. ;)

Man, after seeing all the folks with Compact Cranksets... I am jealous...

Spoke to a friend of mine who went boarding at Summit this past Saturday. Reported a lot of bikes on 38, and even more people in cars not giving them any room either going up or down the mountain....lots of honking and no patience for anyone on a bike. Even though its now closed, if the snow does show up this week, they'll re-open for the weekend.

Hopefully, the majority of the climb will be during the low-traffic mid-day.

A few bikes is one thing. A few hundred or more is another. Some will get the picture to slow down while others will be even more pissed off and aggressive. I just hope the CHP presence is high and liberally handing out tickets.

I am really not happy about all the traffic on the road but it will be mid day by the time I get there so I hope it won't be too bad! Is there snow on the side of the road? That really takes up bike space.

Too bad they didn't reroute the ride this year after the closure of 330. Highway 38 has so many narrow spots that are crazy for uphill riders with lots of traffic. I've found that drivers will put up with the occasional cyclist without a lot of grief, but lots of riders on a road thats already a 'detour' from a lot of drivers' favorite route sounds like trouble.

GMR to Baldy Village might have been a good alternative with no shortage of "agony." Or maybe up 330 if they could've gotten permission to ride through the closed area.

Its a great ride, and I hope it all works out, but I personally think its more fun and a hell of a lot safer with light traffic.

I don't think they had the time to plan another route. Hwy 330 closed last month and to try and figure out the logistics of planning another ride somewhere you would need more time.

Another person asked about snow on the sides of the road. I was up and down on Hwy 38 yesterday, 04/26 and there was no snow built up on the sides of the road. That may change this weekend though, weather is going to be iffy. Hopefully, the forecasted snow will stay away and Snow Summit will not reopen for the weekend but looking at how many storms smacked into the San Bdno mountains this winter and I am sure we will be getting some snow, especially at 8440 feet aka Onyx Summit

If it doesn't snow one thing that you might want to watch out for is all the cinders that are piling up on the sides of the road. They throw the cinders(1/4" volcanic rock) down on the snow for additional traction for the cars. The snowplows come by and scrape the snow and cinders off to the shoulders of the road. Eventually the snow melts and leaves the cinders. It is like riding on ball bearings in some parts. In this day of budget crisis I don't think Caltrans will send a sweeper crew up there to clear them from the roadbed. Be Careful out there!

I'm thinking I might just do this ride on my mountain bike. I'm running a 26x2.0 now. I think it would make for an interesting climb. At least I could rocket on Jack rabbit trail. I heard that's a crappy section. I wonder how long the trail is? Anyone know?
