So sorry to hear about the accident. Hope rider and hiker are OK and none the worse for wear (until someone gets that Heliopter transport bill - yow!).

I'm actually estatic to read the comments about responsibility. I am a hiker and biker both. As a biker I get annoyed at hikers too but dammit they have the right of way and will always be right even when wrong. Long ago I used to ride and bike Peters and Santiago Oaks before all the homes were built and all the foot and bike traffic started. Now both parks are just too congested for me. If I ride through Peters, I do it casually, slow and easy knowing there are many hikers and other bikers using the trail. No problem riding in the park, it is close and can be fun but just slow down and never assume a hiker has a clue what is going on cause most (including myself) don't!

What would be worse is that a lawsuit or liability claim against the City closes the park off to bike traffic altogether. We see that all the time. Right now I am waiting for some really serious accident to occur off Chutes A & B so just too many inexperienced and uneducated riders are now on the new trail and there is just so much traffic - like ants all in a line! Ride safe and aware.

Whatever you want to call them, they still have the right of way. Walkers in Peters Canyon shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's ridden there more than once.

    Holy dead thread resurrection!

Pam, were you searching out old, one-year-old threads back to life to make a point?

I assume you're talking about the county, not the city. If you really do "see that all the time" then the county's attorneys need to grow some balls. The law is on their side.

    Also: Dead thread is dead.

Good point. I just say "Can I come through" and wait until the hiker turns back, SEES ME, AND STEPS ASIDE before proceeding. The same concept applies when you cross a street. When a driver is about to turn right, make sure you make eye contact with him or her before getting yourself in front of the car.
