Can't believe it happened on my easy beginner ride! :(

Ladera Ridge claimed another victim on the "camel's hump."

Our kinda newbie rider Cindy (in her brand new Trail Angel jersey) hit it too fast and went flying. Richie Rich was right behind her and warned her not to hit it too fast, but I guess it's hard to judge your speed on it. He saw her fly through the air and land on her face.

THANK GOD we had EMT Carbon Carrie with us. Cindy was almost totally out, just moaning and had a lot of blood on her face. Rich called 911 and I bombed down Firehose to the fire station at the bottom. I just about broke their windows pounding on them until they came out and followed me on foot up the trail.

By the time they got to her (probably 10 minutes after the crash) she still couldn't answer questions very well and kept asking what happened over and over again. Really scary stuff. The main injury seemed to be her back (and her brain).

Soon the helicopter arrived to carry her away to Mission...

The firefighters reminisced about their most recent rescue of Ken (Northshore) from that very spot and said someone should take out the hump. I told them it wasn't a problem as long as you don't go too fast.

Update: Doc says she has a compression fracture of the T6, so they're expecting 3-5 days in the hospital and 2-3 months recovery.

Update: I'm going to send Cindy some flowers tomorrow (Thursday) to cheer her up (she's pretty down, I hear), so if you are interested in donating a couple of bucks, send it Paypal to [email protected] and I'll add you to list of well-wishers from STR. I'm also going to print up the comments from the board for her.

I felt bad taking pictures (with my cellphone), but I thought she might want them someday, so here they are:

    See any familiar faces, Ken?

That bump taken at speed is brutal on an otherwise uneventful trail. I hope Cindy feels better soon!

Wow...good thing that happened as close as it did to the fire station so you could get help there fast. Hope all ends up well and Cindy heals up quick.

Oh my...Hope she is OK and gets better soon.

I took a spill at high speed this week but was blessed to land ikn nice soft green bushes, I am very thankful.

Never been on that trail but sound like SOP in the future ought to be for someone to be in front setting the speed for newbies through that section.

Ugh! Sorry to hear this. Heal up quickly.

That hump is a real danger if you haven't met it before. Maybe some braking signs like they have on a race track or something.

Totally off subject (sorry) but I'd heard LR was posted No Trespassing as of late last year and had been avoiding it since. Is it open for riding?

I miss one ride and all the excitement happens.

Seriously, heal up Cindy, sorry to hear about the mishap. Glad Rich & Carrie were there and good thinking K., flying to the bottom of that trail for paramedic help!

That is not a bad idea to do some trail work and take out that camel's hump.

    Update

Docs says she has a compression fracture of the T6, so they're expecting 3 days in the hospital and 6 weeks+ recovery.

    Landing face-first, she's lucky it's not a C3 or something.

I heard the same but have never seen any signs there.

No, you're thinking of the infamous "Disco's Drop" off Tijeras Creek Trail on the other side of Oso. I've seen the pic of your knees... that was a mess.

Bummer, get well soon! This isn't going to be good for access to a trail that is of questionable status. I remember during late spring last year, helping out with an airlift on Chiquita Ridge, and the access crackdown started shortly thereafter.

I agree with suggestions to remove the bump...I might have to ride a shovel in soon (I just might have one stashed nearby...:) But be prepared for the fence at the top of Firehose to be wired shut again.
