Very sad - as much as I love to road ride I hardly ever throw a leg over the lynskey any more. At least it wasn't another hit and run...

WOODSIDE -- A bicyclist killed in a Wednesday collision with a van in rural San Mateo County was Joy Covey, a groundbreaking tech executive who was chief financial officer of online retailerAmazon.com at the time of its initial public offering.California Highway Patrol officer Arturo Montiel confirmed Thursday that Joy Dianne Covey, 50, of Woodside, was the bicyclist killed on a rural stretch of road in San Mateo County Wednesday afternoon. The Natural Resources Defense Council, for which Covey served as treasurer and a director, confirmed Thursday that the former high-powered tech executive had died.Covey was biking on Skyline Boulevard at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when she collided with a van that turned in front of her, Montiel said."The vehicle turned left directly in front of the bicycle, which was traveling downhill," Montiel said. The driver, a 22-year-old Fremont man, stayed at the scene and cooperated; he has not been cited in the incident, but Montiel said the collision is still under investigation, though drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor.

I posted a link from mercury news rather than the Yahoo site that I first read this on as the reader comments on Yahoo got me extremely pissed! At best there are some vicious trolls out there; at worst I'm seriously concerned for our species:(

Whats the law with regards to that? If the cyclist were another vehicle, the one in the back would be at fault. Specially if the van had already turned on his turn signal.

    Very sad.

    edit: seems complex.

Rear-end Crashes: If you hit the car in front of you, you are at fault because you did not follow the safe driving rule that requires leaving enough room between the cars to be able to stop safely. You may share the blame if, for example, the car you hit did not have working brake lights or if someone pushed you into it.

Left Turn Crashes: If you are hit making a left turn, it is almost always because you tried to make an unsafe turn, making the accident your fault. Rare exceptions might be if the other person was speeding or ran a red light. However, you should normally see this behavior and wait before turning.

I read a story as well (not sure if it was this one or another, on Yahoo or Facebook), and likewise saw 90% of the comments were about how "Those damned cyclists ("need to stop for stop signs and get the hell out of my way...") Meanwhile over 60 pedestrians and/or cyclists have been killed (mostly hit and runs) in So Cal so far this year. The responsibility of operating a motor vehicle is obviously being given to way too many irresponsible "people". At least this guy was human enough to stop.
