3 months ago I was 240 pounds. I started eating smaller portions, cut back on beer and started riding again after not riding for a year. I am 217 pounds today and I have found my love for riding again...so much that I bought a new bike. My goal is 200 pounds. You can do it!

Duke, thats exactly what im doing (and my wife too). I know if i cut out fat completely i feel like crap and have no energy. ive cut out all processed and fried foods and now hardly any wheat, quinoa instead of rice. Not missing the carbs from wheat and corn at all. not eating out much, with a few exceptions (la sirena!) restaurant food is terrible. there is a lot of current evidence that its not really intake of fats and cholesterol that causes high blood cholesterol and heart disease, its all the carbs, especially grains. I am keeping my cholesterol intake moderate though.

2 beers a day. Proven heart health. Then again, simply consuming fewer calories than you burn is guaranteed to make you lose weight.

As far as BP control goes, my experience (empirical, not anecdotal) is that exercise and diet together are the factors. March 2012 my BP was 150/82. I check it religiously and it's now averaging 108/62, and a couple hours after a really hard ride it's 98/56. Resting pulse rate went from 80 to 58. Total cholesterol went from 207 to 149. LDL from 131 to 90. Weight (at 5'7") from 185 to 165. etc, etc, etc. Lifestyle changes are stopping smoking, portion control, and exercise.

I rode a ton as a kid... Then took 20+ years off and ballooned up to around 270, maybe a little more!

Track what goes in, and track what you expend. You'll find what's killing your health when you look at the carbs, sugars, salts, etc... For me, it was a combination of logging every bite with Myfitnesspal, and recording every ride with Mapmyride or strava. In the 15 months since I started, I've dropped below 200, and have gone from passing out on 5 miles through O'Neill to looking forward to 30-50 miles miles on the weekend...

Good luck! You can do it!

And I can say (with empirical evidence) that it shows! Keep it going. I need some of your self control.

The older I get the more calories I seem to be eating, and of course, the less exercise I am getting. As soon as I finish this sandwich, beer, chips, yogurt and five cookies, I will start exercising...

    maybe tomorrow...

    sigh....

Whole foods plant based diet is the way I have gone. Read the China Study. Watch fat sick and nearly dead (on netflix). Diet is key along with an active lifestyle.
When is the last time a Dr. sat down with you and went through your diet and gave you long term nutritional advice?? They want you in and out, and to prescribe you medication. The food industry does not care about your health. They just want "belly share" and to get you hooked on their highly processed foods. Many of the people who used to work in the tobacco industry manipulating cigarettes, now work in the food industry manipulating food products. Obesity is a huge problem in this country and we are poisoning ourselves and our children with our western diet. Food is everywhere. We eat like Easter for breakfast, Christmas for lunch and Thanksgiving for dinner!
    Good luck on your quest!

The worst is when you hit your first "i can really tell in the mirror" milestone and you kind of ease up on the plan, thinking you have it down.

THAT is when the swing back the other way happens.

So now that you've reached a point where you know it's working.... double down, or relapse.

Awesome Gary. I thought it was just the haircut, but then you were pedaling away from me on HJ a week ago. Good job my friend, keep it up!
