doesnt really count as rider down but had my first physical in a long while at 42 (last one was when I was 19) and it turns out I have high blood pressure, especially the diastolic. Ive seen this doc a few times over the years after injuries, and my bp has been high every time, so he said its time to do something about it. he doesnt want to put me on meds, just wants me to lose weight and eat better; I generally eat healthy but kinda fell off the wagon this year and my weight has crept up to 225 at 5'8". Injuring my neck and then not riding as much didnt help. A lot of it is muscle but ive got a gut going on that ive been in denial about it. my goal now is to get down to 190.
Ride ride ride! Unfortunately my right quad has been feeling a little weak and crampy on-and-off lately, hopefuly not neurological/related to my neck problem ( http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forum/showthread.php?68539-c-5-c-6-herniation ). but the doc said to give that another month to see if it improves before i see the ortho or neurologist. im gonna try to ride on it and see how it goes. hopefully i can still do long rides. Frustrating.

Hmmm. Goodluck on losing the weight.
How was your cholesterol? How high is your BP been running?

There was a hmmmmm at my reply because i got concerned.

You said that you've had your BP elevated for quite some time. IMHO. I would consider starting you on BP meds and take it out as soon as you get to your targeted weight. To be on the safe side. What if you lose the weight and still have HBp?

Before the normal BP was 120/80 but years ago the American Heart Association changed that to pre hypertensive. Be well.

Really, What is the AHA "normal range" now? My BP is going up just reading this.

Gary Sir Crashalot, ride, ride ride. It's the best medicine. But consider getting a home BP monitor so you can check it often. As boxedlp said, don't mess around if it is always high.

Boxed, dont have my blood results back yet. my bp yesterday was 142/95, years back when hes first seen me and i was thinner it was more like 128/85 so it is worse now. I appreciate your concern but i really dont want to be on meds unlesss its absolutely necessary; I trust my doc, he is conservative and doesnt go for the prescription pad if he thinks other options will work. He also knows "white coat syndrome"-where your bp and HR are above normal temporarily just from the stress of being at the doctors-can be a real effect. since im at stage 1 If he thinks i can improve with lifestyle/diet changes and weight loss im gonna do it. His office is right next to my work he said i could pop in every week or two and have my bp checked for free so he can monitor. Ive already started to change up my eating. Gonna be tough; im hungry all the freakin time.

Nope, gotta lay off the bacon, haha. I used to eat so healthy but kinda fell off the wagon this year.

    under 120/80 is considered normal.

You can't exercise your way out of an unhealthy diet.
And no, gorging on nutritious food is not a healthy diet.

A good time to start your new eating lifestyle is... now.

    Congratulations on the new you!

If you snore and or have trouble sleeping you may have sleep apnea. Apnea is the trigger that can cause HBP and other metabolic conditions. IF you have any sleep issues, PM me I can help.

sir crashalot, congratulations! You've been given the opportunity to save your own life by knowing things that may threaten your life. Many people aren't so lucky and don't have the opportunity until it's too late. I hope you take this opportunity to make a difference. Good luck, and I hope it all ends well...in a long, long time from now. :)

Rustyiron, true dat; diet plays a greater role in bp than exercise. ive never been sedentary. JB, I have trouble falling asleep but when i do its not interrupted by apnea. 2wheel; its stuff ive pretty much already known but been in denial and needed a kick in the ass I guess. Years ago I ate a lot healthier and was a vegetarian (wether thats healthy or not is debatable), never drank soda or ate fried foods. Willpower is harder as you get older!

110/70 is the norm for AHA
Sircradhalot: it's good to be conservative and I guess your doctor knows you well.
I just seen to many stuff in the er as a nurse with unmanaged BP. At least you know what to do.

Unmanaged BP can ruin a lot of your organs specially your kidneys.

At least take fish oil. Get the good ones that melts styrofoam cups.

Yeah, I know. I'm older than you are, and I don't eat as good as I should. My wife reminds me. A lot.
Like you, I know what I should be doing, but I don't. I'm kind of in denial as well (It's not really a problem yet, right?) Fortunately, I haven't yet been given formal notice by my doctor that I actually need to change something. Yet. I'm sure that day will come.

So Lee, when was your last physical? Listen to your wife! ;)

Diet and exercise can help a lot of disease processes. Congrats for recognizing it and for acting before you need meds. White Coat Syndrome is real, but it is also indicative of a higher risk for a sustained high blood pressure in the future.

Would a HR monitor help you ?

I just purchased one this week and finally used it yesterday. Max Beat as i was pushing hard, max beat was 199 - Avg was 185/187. 199 was climbing Mustard via Whiting. I have seen others at 189/190 and cant help wondering under line issue. Reason why i asked if someone in your family had this problem (genetics). I know high cholesterol can cause a higher HR then usual.

Diet is absolutely the key! Exercise is great and helpful but diet should come first. Here is my suggestion from my research on subject:

Cut out refine/processed food ie. anything with sugar added and white bread, stay away from white rice, bread and pasta!
Eat as much organic/natural food as possible, our chicken and beef got way too much shiat in them
Don't do too much heavy exercise, keep your heart rate to medium-low but long duration (2-3 hours)
Don't cut out too much fat, your body needs it
Even just a walk try excercise everyday
Big breakfast, medium lunch and small dinner

I know it's hard and I haven't been able to consistently do it but I can tell the difference when I can follow my own advise. Small dinner is the easiest to do and I feel pretty good when I do that for a few days straight.
