65 yo Hollywood mogul run down by deputy. Nice.

    This is profoundly disturbing:

    http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/...heriff-20131208,0,3634464.story#axzz2mzFY75IT

On TV news last night, I heard that the cyclist was in the bicycle lane, and the deputy was not over the speed limit. Be careful out there, drivers. I would say "be careful cyclists," but this guy was doing all he could do to be safe, other than not ride. Probably never knew what hit him - I hope.

Interestingly, this was just posted on Pinkbike:

When I commute to work, I am scared shitless of people. I've driven behind people doing makeup or leaning over to get sonething while they drift into the bike lane I was riding on just the day before.

+1. I've thought about getting a road bike but stories like these scares me away.

But with that said, cyclist at times do help the situation, I've seen them ride 3 abreast down the 133 and Aliso Creek, guys riding circles through the right turn lane so he doesn't have to unclip and put his foot down and guys blowing through intersections.

Both sides have to do their parts to foster a safer riding environment.

It's funny that we have laws about distracted driving - no handheld cell phones or texting (not arguing this, I obviously agree with it). What are the cops doing? Using a friggin' laptop while driving. And, yes, they do use it while driving. Why are the people charged with enforcing traffic laws the least likely to obey them? It's rather disturbing.

    R.I.P. cyclist.

Awe Rox; don't give into the fear mongers. Road biking can be amazing. I'm all about awareness, and it's tragic when a cyclist goes down, but it's no reason to live in fear, or skip the joy of riding a bicycle on pavement because of these tragic events. Sheeot happens. I ride a bicycle to add life to my days, not to add days to my life.

Let me know when you get your road bike, and we'll go for a spin. :)

I use to road ride in my twenties Brian (yes, that was 3 decades ago...eesh) when helmets weren't pushed. My route was always 133 and PCH; many close calls my friend. I've now found mtbing far more adrenaline driving for me (like surfing)...road riding...yawn!
I still want to try your fat bike though....

All I can say is if the cop is found to have been using his onboard computer or his cell phone while the car was moving, he should do jail time. By definition that's negligent homicide. Blatant disregard for the safety of others. And I can't keep track of the number of times I've seen cops weaving all over because they're looking at their computer screen instead of the road. Idiots.

Um... boys and girls... it's not illegal for the coppers to use their electronic devices while driving.

May not be illegal. It's still negligent, and it's still homicide. Or at the very least involuntary manslaughter. An act can be legal and still be actionable. Or a crime, if done with blatant disregard for common sense.

It's legal for any law enforcement officer to use their phone while on duty or driving, as long its within the scope of their duties. But in public's opinion it doesn't look good when you see a cop yapping on the phone or texting while driving.

The comments about the cop was probably surfing the web on the in vehicle computer is absurd and shows a lack of knowledge of what these computer can or cannot have access to. I don't think he's going to risk his nice paying job surfing Facebook or STR using the in vehicle computer(s).

I have a few relatives who are officers and have been on several ride-alongs. The last thing they're doing while driving is talking on the phone or on the laptop for pleasure. On-board computer is normally only used while on the move if they need to run a plate on a suspicious vehicle.

However, sad to see another fatality. Be safe everyone.

RIP! Another one bites the dust. I really enjoy road biking but I would probably refrain from riding anywhere in LA county. Too many bad drivers and pot holes all over the place. Not that OC doesn't have its share of bad drivers. How the heck does someone miss seing a road biker on the road anyways?
