I had a run in with a pack on sunday over near Box Springs in moreno valley. I was out for a run on the trails. Saw one scurry off the trail into the bushes and just kept my eye in that general area and ran by. Little while later started to hear a lot more rustling. Stopped to listen and heard a few of the coyotes communicating (with usually 2 barks followed by a loud screaming sound). I started to mimic this sound back to them and I think they thought I was communicating with them because they would repeat back. Either that or they were laughing at me. Anyway, after that I stayed near to the road and got back into civilization as soon as I could. Not that comfortable around them yet.

Almost killed by a pack (twice)

There I was in Sycmore (Pt. Mugu) on a scorching hot day. I looked into the shade and there was a juvenile coyote suffering from the heat. He was trying to look cute and non-threatening. In fact I was sure he seemed to be begging for water.

But I was not fooled. That panting was just blood-lust. I knew that if I got any closer the pack would jump out of the bushes and strip my bones like a pack of piranhas on a side of beef. No way could they fool me!

Another pack tried the same trick at Cheeseboro. This time the pack put a pup out for bait (disguised as a fox). He was trying to act like an orphan. He was pretending to be starving so he was turning over leaves supposedly looking for anything to eat. But I knew what he really wanted to eat and it wasn't my Clif Bar! I pulled out my bear spray and braced for the inevitable attack. But they must have seen my weapon and didn't attack. Whew! I escaped with my life.

You're lucky they didn't take out your tongue in cheek first.

That first pic Abui posted of the pup (or is it cub?) is adorable. Just wondering, can a coyote pup be domesticated??? That would be sooo cool to have one as a pet. Could you imagine a pet coyote running around with dogs in a dog park or taking it to a Petsmart for some treats??

May sound funny but it is true. Male coyotes can even act like pimps putting the female coyotes that are in heat and looking for stray male dogs. Once the horny domesicated unloyal to it's owner for straying dog attempts to court the female coyote, the male coyotes will pounce on the dog and masticate it's flesh.

Yes when I lived in Mendocino County the neighboring ranch raised one from a pup (dumb city folk coming out to the country). Personally I stayed away from that "dog" because looking in his eyes you could tell that something was not right. He stayed around for a couple of years then finally took off. Maybe he went back to his pack more likely he was killed by them.

Everyone knows you need more than Pepper Spray to scare off a coyote.

    I personally carry Acme Dynamite.

I don't know the answer to that, but it's an interesting question. My wife, who is a veterinarian, and I debate it all of the time. It depends on whether you believe in instinct and/or learned behavior. Personally, I believe in learned behavior, which would say to me, yes you could domesticate a coyote pup. Just don't leave it near your infant child and blame it on me.

Wow that's a little too close for comfort. I was riding in Aliso, down Coyote trail of all places, at dusk solo when one trotted down off the mountain in front of me about 20 yards. This one didn't obey verbal comands and just trotted along without fear then I got spooked into thinking there was a pack of his friends around the next corner sharpening their fangs . After about 1/2 mile he eventualy jumped off the trail without incodent. It was spooky for a little while because he was not scared.

I carry regular pepper spray attached to the front of my CamelBak shoulder strap.
I can access it pretty quick
Would it help? I don't know, but its better than nothing, right?
