So I am having problems mounting my new tires on my 29er bike. I have mounted tires and changed tubes on my my standard 26 inch mountain bike dozens of times with no problem. However, I recently got a 29er bike and attempted to change the tires this weekend. It was almost like the tire was a bit too small to fit on the rim. I wrestled with it for over 15 minutes before I got it mounted. After I got it mounted I realized that I pinched one of the tubes and it would not hold air...so I had to start over. The wheels are WTB Speed Discs and the tires are Kenda Small Block 8's. Also, before anyone asks the obvious question...yes, the tires are 29" specific tires. Any ideas on how to make the mounting go smoother? Are the 29" tires typically a bit tighter?

    Hmm... new tires?
Most kenda 29er tires feel 'too loose'....

Could be the rims. On my 26er, i have noticed that DT 5.1 rims are a BITCH to put tires on.

Trying to install my Captain 2.0's on my 9'er rims was next to impossible. Took 2 people and about a half an hour. But it did go on.

    Soapy water works

It couldn't hurt to use some soapy water. I just mounted a new Nevegal and when I got to the last section to slip on I squirted it with some soapy water and it went right on.

For mounting I use "Brawn Glass Cleaner" a Windex look-alike. Better than soapy water.

29er tires and rims vary just like 26 tires and rims. I found the SB8's extremely tight.

I have speed discs and laser discs and the kendas are hell to get the bead to seat. Took me about an hour to seat on of them. Kendas are horribly measured.

Just like mounting car tires, I push the bead on the opposite side to the middle of the rim. It usually gives a little extra to get it on.

Took me a good half hour and a bit of sweat to get my Nevegal onto my mavic C29ssMax wheel. The Captain Control slid much easier onto the rear wheel. Ymmv but I don't look forward to any future tire swaps for my 29er. LOL

Never had any problems with Nevegals or Rampages on Salsa Delgados or Sun Rhyno lites in 29'ers. Sun Rhyno lites in a 26" are a PIA though with every tire I tried to put on.

I've had a smidge bit of difficulty putting tires on WTB Laserdiscs 29, but nothing a little soapy water couldn't handle.

The tire I could not get mounted was a Geax Saguaro to a Bontrager Rhythm wheel. Took four guys at the shop to do it then I realized I wouldn't be able to change the tire by myself in the middle of nowhere... I had them take the tire off. I talked to Guitar Ted about the Geax at Sea Otter and he says they just don't fit on Bontrager rims. :?:

Before I knew this though, I told Geax it was there fault and they warrantied me a new tire. Since it won't fit on my rim it's up for sale.

Im having this problem right now. I had a set of ZTR arch 29er/ hope pro2 wheels built last week, at the same time I dropped of the maxxis Ignitors at the same time. So when i picked them up from the shop the tires were on using tubes and every thing was cool. yesterday i wanted install the yellow tape for the stans tubeless conversion. I managed to get one side on, it felt tight and was thinking it was gonna be little tough getting the other side on. Yea that was an under statement, i struggled with it for about 30 minutes with no progress and still dont have the tire back on

is it just the maxxis tires, or the maxxis tires with the ZTR rims?

any one eles know any other tires that are easier to mount and dismount with the arch 29er rim?
