so yesterday after crashing on my head and right shoulder (i wont say where) i went to the ER to make sure I was ok. Came out after 7 hours of sitting around with a nasty Hives rash and what the Dr. called a "seperated shoulder." I'm pretty bummed because I was just starting to get my speed back after taking a winter break and now i have no idea when i'll be able to start riding again.

Anyone know what the heal time is on a "seperated shoulder" or how soon i can start hitting the trails?

6 weeks depending on how bad the degree of separation. I had a 3rd degree AC separation. After 4 wks I was able to ride my bike around, 2 months before I returned back to dirt. Good luck on the recovery, take your time and don't hurry back. Let the shoulder heal otherwise it'll be jacked up.

I have separated my right shoulder twice, it sucks. My first separation was the worst and I couldnt ride with any agression for at least 8 weeks. I could do very easy rides at 4 weeks.#-o

Sorry to hear about the injury. Hopefully, you wont be off the bike long.

Last Year, I had a grade 3 separation. I rode 2 days later and did Mammoth closing weekend two weeks after that. Probably not the smartest thing to do, but I guess i'm a knucklehead sometimes. It was painful, at times, but I only really noticed it a lot on anything where I had to pull up on the bars. Like Andy said, around six weeks (if its a grade 3). Mine still hurts sometimes... also some clicks and pops.

Hope you get well soon. Is it true that if you separate your shoulder, it will be easier to separate in the future?

Unfortunately, I am very familiar with shoulder separations. The posters above are right. No matter what degree it is, your recovery time will depend on the severity of the bone movement. Two different 3rd degree separations could have varying recovery times because of the stretching of the tendons and nerves. I've separated both of my shoulders but to different degrees. My first separation was a 3rd degree separation and I could never have ridden my bike in 2 days after the injury. I wouldn't have been able to even straighten my arm out after 2 days. I was back on the bike in 3 months. My next separation was less severe and I was able to ride again within 4 days (although it was painful). That injury was 7 weeks ago and I'm still feeling it. I ride with the injury because it doesn't affect my grip or riding ability.

    Good luck with the recovery.

No. Once it heals, it heals. The clavicle will always be in a different location but it wouldn't be more easy to move.

Like Art says its all up to you. I have had two minor one (each shoulder) in the last month or so. First one was grade1 maybe grade 2 and I took a few weeks off. Mostly because I have a roof rack and couldn't lift bike that high. I did race DH/DS less then later. I separated the other shoulder at that race. It was about the same as first and I went and rode little over a week later and rode Bootleg after 2 weeks. Its all about pain really. If you can manage the pain you can ride. Its going to hurt on drops and jumps stuff that jars your body and some when pulling up. My biggest problem still is lifting the bike to put it on car or anything above my head for that fact.

Yeah, after my spill that broke the elbow, I am still experiencing pain from the slight shoulder and wrist separation...so much so that the pain from that is keeping me from fully doing the range of motion for the elbow in therapy. PT said that a separation....usually accompanied by a compression of the cartilage between the joints initially (commonly referred to as "bone bruises" can last anywhere from four weeks to 6 months, depending on the severity of the impact taken and as the other have mentioned, the degree of separation between the joints.

Its going to hurt for a bit. But rest, get some issues of your favorite bike mags and settle for a bit. I'm still awaiting my return, but I know if I push it, it will only delay it more.

    Healing vibes.

    ps

It will never be the same unfortunately. Plan on getting some barbells; chest, shoulder, and rotator cuff exercises will have your muscle structure keep the joint together now that the your ball/socket interface is blown.

My cousin seperated his surgically repaired shoulder last wednesday at Fully. The same spot I ate doodoo 6 weeks prior and bent my brand spanking new Stumpy wheel. I don't remember the exact name of the trail, but it's at the beginning of a single track, there is a little dip with roots that catches your front wheel if don't pull up, and it's kind of deceiving. I'm thinking about bringing a shovel next time and filling in the dip so it doesn't happen to anyone else, but I can't find the time, I'll try to take a pic of it wednesday.
