For anyone who's ever dabbled in the post-apocalyptic zombie genre (don't laugh, there's some great stuff to be found - though, admittedly, a lot of bad amateur stuff too), I went through a phase where I read over a dozen after starting in on some with good content. I eventually found most of the genre to be repetitive and recycled, both in theme and form. When I was about to give up hope, I stumbled upon perhaps the best of the genre, Mountain Man by Keith Blackmore.

It's now on book 3. It was awkward at first, since the writing style follows the mental stability and inner composure of the character, which I initially mistook for lack of writing skill. You see examples of much better writing later on. I also appreciated the change in setting, the alcoholic anti-hero, and appropriately-paced action (meaning it's used sparingly, not a nonstop Rambo flick converted to novel.)

It's super cheap if you buy it through the amazon/Kindle store. I highly recommend as a good time-killing book to keep on your phone that you can pick up on a moments notice when you need to kill time.

Just finished "The Sun Also Rises" by Hemingway. Good read, makes you want to travel through Europe and get beligerantly drunk and watch a bull fight.

Next book: "The Icarus Deception" by Seth Godin.

In college I wrote a 20 page analysis on The Sun Also Rises" as an optional paper which brought my grade from a C to an A... based from summaries. I guess I should honor the book and read it, LOL.

I just finished "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (late to the party on that one I know). Going to look for some new ideas here!

Im reading, The Bonobo and the Atheist by Frans De Waal.

Its about finding morality without the influence of a god. So far so good. Very interesting to find out that many animals that arent mammals show empathy and perform acts of altruism.

"This would be a man who has ruined his life for sport." - Tom McGuane

Stephen Bodio throws that old McGuane line out every now and then. Catches me. Makes me head to the source:
