I am not saying losing a job is the right punishment but for me after numerous background checks it was a huge wake up call. I am just saying that people are not afraid of the consequences. Most the first timers get probation, lose some driving privileges and a nice fine. My old roommates X had 3 DUIs and never did time. Worst was he spent a weekend in jail waiting for court date.

Jail may be free room and board and if you have nothing that might sound good but its seems most these people aren't people with nothing.

That is also correct. It's is not an easy solution, I think they need to punish them by not letting them drive! Also make them do things that will realize what they did like help the victim's family or do drug awareness program or even standing on the street with a sign.

simple jail time isn't a solution which we all know by now.

This also does not work. There are plenty of people out there on the road with suspended licenses or no licenses at all.

It is relatively safe out there.....there is a simple solution to make it safer, especially to the 100's of cars that continuously cross into the bike lane while driving: place the Botts Dot on the divider line between roadway and bike lane. When drivers start to feel them, they will pay attention.

There's quite a few places in the world where even just putting in a single reflector on the CAR side of the Bicycle Lane line keeps people from crossing the line where rumble strips are not installed...much cheaper, its an audible warning to driver and cyclist, and they are not as intrusive or costly to install.

Unfortunately, they are expensive, so a guerilla installation (don't ask) isn't really possible, and they're not recognized as an acceptable lane warning by CalTrans...they are on the Queen K. and other roads in Hawaii.

The best thing all of us reading this post can do is never drink and drive.

Sadly most riders when they stop for food have drink at the same time. Not saying they are at DUI levels but still it ironic how often riders drink afters rides.

Yeah, I won't matter to DUI drivers.....but it may just be enough for distracted drivers.

I drive Santiago Canyon every morning into work and saw the Memorial Ride today. How very sad. The canyon itself was extremely busy and they're doing tree trimming at various locations which blocks the bike lane. I did see a couple CHP trying to keep an eye on things, but it was like a freeway out there. I hope the ride went safely. This is the third time location I've seen the ghost bike at now :(

While driving the toll road to work early this morning I saw the ghost bike mounted to the fence and lots of people standing around, along with the Channel 7 News van. Most sobering.....I will remember it every time I pass by, on bike or in car.
    RIP Joey

The ride was extremely safe. CHP, Irvine Police, Orange Police, Tustin Police, and the Orange County Fire Authority shut down all the streets that we took up to the site of the ghost bike so there were no problems. At the site several people spoke and we were able to remember Joey as we knew him. Thanks to all the law enforcement officers and fire fighters for helping Jax do this. R.I.P. Joey!

Couldn't make the Memorial Ride but we did go by early. CHP was at the dump hill turnoff probably around 6AM.

Punishments and fines have increased every year for decades and the drunk/impaired driver problem still remains. If there was a easy solution one would have been found. The solutions that exist now are expensive, like continuous alcohol monitoring bracelets, 24/7 transdermal patch testing for drugs and long term substance abuse treatment. I know this because I have being dedicated in keeping drunk drivers off the road for over 20 years. I have never promoted what I do ( http://www.dmsprogram.com/ ) on this site until now, this last death and the possible release of the drunk driver today has me looking to promote that she wears a alcohol monitor while awaiting for the District Attorney to file correct charges. If the family has money she will get out on bail.

There's some "unofficial" (because they're not authorized to speak on the case specifically) information regarding the release. The type of tests performed take weeks because those are the type of tests defense attorneys can't refute. The field sobriety test, and subsequent arrest was necessary to take the samples that could be tested. This'll also allow much more evidence in place, like additional people who were on that part of the road around the time of the incident further placing the person at/near the scene...very important since nobody has been reported as being a witness to the accident. The more evidence in place at the time of the charging, the harder it is for bail to be granted, and the harder it is for a defense attorney to build reasonable doubt.

Flight risk? Perhaps...but then you've just made it easier for the prosecution once you've been caught.

The ride was well-organized and well-attended by many types of cyclists on all types of bikes, some of whom knew Joey or his family, some of whom knew of Joey, and many more who saw this as a possible way to turn tragedy into opportunity and awareness, wherever that may lead.

The presence of law enforcement could not be thanked enough, as it also ensured even the most frustrated drivers on the road this morning that our group of 200+ were there for a memorial service on the same road they frequent, and we all share, every day.

    Well done, by everyone.

    Joey will be missed.

Yes today's ride was awesome. The police presence was great and as you said, they can't be thanked enough. Its pretty amazing what can be pulled together in just a few short days.

Did anyone notice the lady at the top of the South bound 241 honk and try to go around the cop when the light turned green? This was as we were entering the intersection. I don't get people.
