Another rider on here and I were out for a quick evening loop when we crossed a group of HS 'team' riders. The coach took them all down Cattle pond - two crashed (HAD no business taking those kids down that hills). The girl was sitting on her seat with her feet in a 12/6 position, couldn't stop and was ejected. They insisted she was okay - I walked her bike (and mine) as her coach had to help her walk out. The other rider guided the other part of the group back out - as it is a one way for bikes, need to teach them the correct way, they pedaled some, walk some. Some of the bikes had very little working brakes, some wouldn't shift, etc. It was the end of the day and was pretty much dark as we got back to the trail head. Would they have been okay, probably but it would have been VERY dark for sure by the time they got there. I understand her position, I wouldn't want to have to stop another from enjoying their evening ride and if she was out-of-sorts, she would not have been clear anyway. And you know how head strong us girlies can be about needing help from a stranger. I just prefer to be safe, rather sorry - and who knows, you could have made a new friend... Next time, walk her out or call the ranger.
Doing anything more would have invited more irritation from her. As it was, her insistence on "feeling fine" was getting louder, so it was a real catch 22 situation. At what point does extending a helping hand become harassment? The way she brought up "Larry" was completely out of the left field. As many have said in this thread, being tough can work against you when you are suffering from a concussion. Can you ask Teri to see if we are talking about the same person?
I stopped at the Ralphs next to Borrego last night at about 6:45 and noticed two women on MTBs and a cop at the entrance to the parking lot. One was on her cell phone and the other was talking to the cop. Both women seemed fine, and I think they had flagged down the officer. I'm wondering now if it was an issue related to this thread. Sorry I don't have more info than that.
Come to think of this, by the time I got done with the ride and came back to my office near the Ralphs, I remembering hearing a helicopter hovering in the area. Didn't really check over where it was circling around, but it wasn't just passing through the area for sure.
Good answer! This reminds me of something that occurred two weeks ago - I did my normal Sunday ride in Chino Hills and was coming down Telegraph. Not far for the trailhead, a rider comes by (going up and as I was coming down) and mumbles something to me. I thought he said "snake!" or something so I started watching for something in the road. Not far down I ran across a male rider and his wife. The male rider was down, had a serious head injury (still can't figure out how that happened - the trail was flat and smooth at that spot). His face was bloodied and he had blood coming out of his nose and mouth. His left eye was swollen shut. There was blood all on his clothes and on the ground. The wife was frantic, trying to call the paramedics - in her panic she sent then to the wrong area (into Carbon Canyon Regional Park instead of CHSP). I took the phone to give directions; a gentleman riding down with me, got out first aid and he and the wife attended to the husband who definitely required care. Thankfully (imagine the coincide) two riders came down the trail - both ER doctors! The rider now in very capable hands I took off to locate the EMTs and bring them in... why didn't that first rider stay with the injuried couple? Why would he ride on like that? That still bothers me to this day...never ever leave an injuried rider...
If you know me, or been around here long enough, you know that I was kidding.....kinda. I hear ya, see above.
I no longer have her number; I was just trying to get you to stop beating yourself up but if this helps: You should have escorted her out you beast!! <sarcasm>
Well can someone call Larry then and ask him about Teri?? Prof hasn't been this derailed since he thought dudes would hit on him and he'd be confronted with hairy hippie chicks if he ventured to try yoga...
Seriously Kelly?? Maybe she doesn't want anyone to know and why call Larry at work?? Give it a rest you guys, it's none of our business.
Unless you want to make sarcastic/tongue-in-cheek remark about a stolen bike. Then everyone wants a 2 day "cry-to-the-mod fest" as though you were the bike thief himself. Concussions, apparently, are fair game though. Makes sense. =P
Yes Bob but the TMI is always on me. Correct me if I'm wrong: the OP wanted to know if he did the right thing and the majority says "no." I wanted him to stop feeling badly. Heck, I remember crashing hard on Red Tail in El Moro; I was so focused on Rattlesnake and cleaning it my back tire washed out on a hard edge bc I wasn't focused on the trail I WAS riding. Poor Margo (CalEpic's wife) was behind me and she caught the wrath of Rox. Maybe Teri was just pissed she crashed that early on in her ride (and she's a little dingy to begin with and I mean that w love I think Pro learned his lesson....
#1 rule, have them sit down, then lay down and treat for shock (comfort head, raise legs above the head, a camel back and some helmets will do in a pinch). Happy helping on the single trac If you have a big crash, get your self up to the trail and treat yourself for shock. My camel back and helmet works for me. Get up and get out before your muscles go cold and stiff or it will be a long miserable walk out in the dark.
Its threads like this that you learn from, on a positive tip. Im sure at one point or another we all have ran into a rider who just went down on the bike, and didn't really think if he or she might have just bumped their head or not, but at least now we know the signs to look out for to prevent problems a person can further experience...
OMG! I crash all the time and have had concussions. However, if one of you freaks comes up on me after a crash and insists on walking me out (when I say no), you may get some damn pepper spray in your face. People are scarier than mountain lions, as they are more unpredictable. If you didn't feel at ease, you could ask to call someone, but you cannot force anything (including help) on anyone. *sheesh*
As fate would have it, Help out a big dude tonight with the apparent broken collarbone in LCWP, Saw the international distress signal for cyclist a nice unattended bike in the middle of the fireroad. Guy was in decent shape, buddy pushing his bike up boat canyon and him walking. But at first he wasn't sure how about a whether he could walk so his buddy dialed 911, And there was a little confusion about whether the Rangers were coming or not. I gave him a cursory look no head trauma cuts really, So made a plan with the buddy he would stay with him and walk out slowly and I would ride out to find the Para'S whether they're coming or not and whether up Willow or from Ridgepark, Directed the paramedics out to them Alls well that ends well...with a broken collar bone that is Glad I didn't get pepper sprayed...
