I had the pleasure on Sunday to ride (Turnbull) with Coldbrews. While we live only a few miles from each other, our paths had never crossed. If not for a PM, our paths would NOT have crossed.

What makes HIM so special? :-k
His sweet bike? Riding abilities? The fact he spent much of the ride with BOTH tires off the ground? NO! What makes him special is the fact... He is/was a LURKER! #-o

Every ride, I find myself "WELCOMING" a new member into the STR family. For many, their "introduction" is the last time we ever hear from them. That is quite unfortunate- for them AND for us! :(

What makes STR "special" is NOT the biking. It is the collection of (like-minded, good hearted, interesting, honest and hard working) members who make this site so special. :bang:

My point: You get from this site what you put into the site!

One cannot fully appreciate what I am talking about unless they participate!

*** If distance/scheduling issues keep you from joining most rides- make the time to attend... one!
*** Fat and out of shape? So is (my homie) Fired Yo Momma. He shows up for every ride! :D
*** If you have a biking question- start a thread, post your questions, PM those whom you feel may be able to help.
*** If you feel most rides are simply too far away- post a ride yourself. Someone will join you! If they don't, someone will join you the second time you extend the offer!
*** Can't attend a ride? Meet us for food/drinks AFTER our ride. I would love to tell you what was missed! :D
*** Take a few minutes to fill out your personal profile- specifically your location!
Had Coldbrews not done so, you would not be reading this thread today!

*** Don't feel like posting? Click the "THANKS" button whenever you feel someone has made a contribution worthy of praise. By doing so, we will know you exist!

*** How 'bout "making my day" by posting an opinion/response to this thread?
*** If you live anywhere near Turnbull- PM me! Never been to Turnbull- PM me! Want to invite ME on a ride- PM me!

    See ya' Thursday Coldbrews!

Very well said. I am on here a lot (duh) but it is well worth it. I love bikes (I mean--I REALLY love bikes) so if I'm not riding them, why not spend my time reading about them and talking to others who love them?

Now that the San Diego contingent is growing a lot, I have met several other riders who love to ride (almost) as much as me. My days of having to rides solos are all but ancient history because odds are, one of the SD STR peeps I've met is able to join me. More importantly--I consider a few of those people friends, not just people I happen to ride with from time to time. You're not gonna get that by just lurking!!

Oh yeah, one more thing: Ironhorse sucks!!
    Just kidding Dino:beer:

Ya, Dino glad you took the initiative to invite me out, it was cool to me you, Hanzo and Coleko. I'm eager to get out there and meet the rest of the family now.

As far as the ride today. You and Hanzo sure know how to show a guy a good time. I'm looking forward to more of it. Hopefully we get to know eachother well enough for you to feel alright about goofing on my riding skills and or my appearence. Then I'll know I'm accepted.:-s Maybe I'll have to buy an Ironhorse first? Ha Ha Ha.

I'm hopefully gonna start making it out on Thursdays and other STR rides. Remember to drop me a line whenever you ride T Canyon.

Glad I found the site, sure beats riding alone.

    Well said Dino.

I think STR has arrived at a formula that works. Personally, I think the tendency to welcome people into the 'group' instead of being 'cliquish' (is that a word???) and an emphasis on making many of the rides novice or beginner friendly are two important factors that have helped the group to become so popular. A strong house is built with a solid foundation.

I hope my post did not appear long winded! I had MANY reasons for writing it. The ever expanding San Diego crew.... My Homie's in the San Gabriel's..... A few friends/racers who have stopped viewing the site due to lack of "advanced" rides. Friends who have dropped out... About 10 "Hardcore" Freeride (Buddy's) who have no STR rides to go on! Etc. etc. etc.

Pacman- For some reason that IH insult REALLY bothered me! :D
Remember that Noble Ride you promised- when the temps cool down? :-k Buy me a tall one and we will call it even? Whatta' ya' say? :D

P.S.- It would be nice if a LURKER put fingers to keyboard and posted an opinion...... (OR) commited to attending a group ride!

I would love to ride tomorrow, but my wife made Labor Day plans for me. I get to drive from SD to Burbank--oh happy happy joy joy (insert sarcastic tone here).

    Lurking

I admit I used to be a lurker. I would ride with friends or solo and once in awhile would see HuckSpokes and SprocketHead at the trailhead and we'd ride together. It took awhile for me to start going to rides but once I went to one of Gene's rides I was hooked, just ask A&A. I may not go to all the rides due to a 3 year old but I do go to the ones I can. The all day rides or out of town week rides that :steppie: or the Super Manns do are far and few between for me but thats OK. I'll just enjoy the pics of the RR and be envious. Plus a wise man from here told me that the kids grow up sooo fast and to enjoy the younger years(cough cough OMR and grandpa too). The nice, good hearted people that are on this forum is unmatched. If I had to name all the great people I've met I'd be up all nite. If you doubt the generosity and kindness of the people here just read some of these threads.

Once again this could go on forever. If you're a lurker, its ok not to post but come out to one of Genes rides when you're ready. The more the merrier.

Coldbrews, Coleko and Dino great to ride with you today. Hope the 2 of you enjoyed yourselves despite the Africa hot weather.

I just joined the group two weeks ago. I missed the first ride out at O'Neill due to my distance and my snooze alarm ... but made it out on Saturday for OMR's ride at El Moro. I was welcomed by the group and had a great time. Looking forward to joining other rides.

I'll be looking to post some rides once I have a few rides under my belt -- don't you worry :)

Thanks for the posting and thanks to everyone for making new riders welcome.

    1) Thanks for accepting the invite!
    2) Trust me- The other members of the family are "COOLER" than me! At least that is what they tell me!:D
    3) Are you sure you want me to GOOF on you? OK.... Your jumping abilities are AMAZING! Your form :-k.... Looked like you were having seizures in mid-air. High speed single track skills- except for the fact you almost rode off a 150 foot cliff- not bad! Trying to keep up with Dino on (fast) technical singletrack- NOT GONNA HAPPEN! :bang:
    4) Your '07 Specialized Enduro Expert (sweet set-up):bang: is a good "learner" bike.  When you grow up, maybe I will take you shopping for a real bike. Iron Horse Baby! :bang:

Won't be making this months ride! Taking the REIGN for a spin? Hmmm :-k Why would I ride a YUGO when I own a Ferrari? :D

Excellent thread, Dino. Thanks for the guilt trip about the fact that I've been slacking on welcoming new members!

And I've never ridden the trails at Turnbull, though I used to ride the canyon on my road bike years back (grew up a few miles south). Soon as it cools down a bit, I might just hit you up for a guided tour. And if you're ever looking for a ride partner in south OC, give me a shout. I won't even heckle you about your choice of bikes (much)

    I'm a newbie

    Well put Dino,
I definitely will be joining the rides when I can. My local buds won't venture out past their backyard. Would love to ride more often in the San Gabriels. I've ridden Strawberry, Chilao, winter creek, Sturtevant and others out there, just not often enough. I'll keep an eye on the ride post and post rides of my own.
    Thanks.

Now that I have Saturdays off, I can venture out of my backyard in the OC too. Post up the rides, I'd love to ride the San Gabs. Sept is full already though. The weather and trails will only get better. More rides will be posted, newbie, intermediate, and advance.

I have to say that when I came on STR I was a lurker for about a year almost! When I finally started riding with the group people already knew my name from the forum and couldnt believe I hadnt been riding with the group more often. I was fat and out of shape and felt bad for holding people up but then when I started riding with the group I realized how they welcomed anyone and everyone. I was never left behind, I never felt like I wasnt good enough and I never felt like I didnt want to come back for more. Instead it motivated me to get in shape, get stronger and encourage others to do the same. On top of all this I have a whole new bunch of people in my life I call "friends". Now that is priceless...
