http://m.utsandiego.com/news/2013/apr/11/injured-mountain-biker-dies-in-cleveland-forest/ Just saw this posted on another site. Rip man. Anyone know anymore details?
Rip, According to report, tracked them down by phone GPS. Glad were found fairly quick, unfortunately under terrible circumstances.
Thats why i endomondo every ride , I tell my wife that if im not home and she cant get a hold of me to check my endomondo and check where my phone is blinking or trail stopped Chances are i will be layed out somewhere and she can find me R.I.P ryder
No, Strava does not do 'Live' tracking as I understand. However, you could track your ride using Endomondo... then export the ride from Endomondo as a GPX file... then upload the GPX file to Stava.
I use spot when I'm riding. It's a GPS tracker that has an SOS button. Works excellent. They also have an air rescue service that is worldwide and only like $120 for the year. Super cheap insurance. http://www.findmespot.com/en/
I just have google lattitude with the wife running in the background on our phones. It updates our broad position (within several blocks by cell tower triangulation) every 20-50 minutes or so, but if you turn on GPS when you ride, it'll keep track of that level of detail too.
How do I set up Endomondo live tracking if I dont have facebook? Is that part of the free app or do I need to pay for it?
It looks like the article was posted only about 3 hours after the man was brought out. It may be that details weren't available yet and that family were still being notified. Very sad to see. Condolences to his family & friends. Good advice about Spot and Endomondo (hadn't heard of that before).
Its free on there site someone just has to click on your profile to see what you are doing at that moment http://www.endomondo.com
I have not heard about Endomondo before. Thanks for the info. Just now downloaded and installed it on my Android phone. Any helpful suggestions or tips for me to set it up and/or to use it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
I turn off audio coach as its annoying but other than that just start the app and ride when you are done it can upload to facebook automatically if you like after a ride you can go online and see your full stats ,elevation, time, speed ect.... I also turn off auto pause so the app is always running vs stop and go every time you take a break At home log into endomond and grab your profile URL It will look like this , you can click on the activity Mountain biking ,running, cross train ect... It will take you to a map and show where you are and progress Also Endomondo can be used with Bluetooth heart rate monitors and last time i checked Strava didnt http://www.endomondo.com/profile/372509
Really sad news. Prayers sent. Personally, if I die on the trail, I won't be in any hurry to get anywhere. Realistically, I don't expect to be rescued in the first 30 minutes after I call in for help. If I survive the first 30, then I'm not dying in a hurry either. YMMV. If you're doing dangerous stuff, you may actually need 24/7 GPS tracking.
I'm dreading the release of the name. Sucks no matter who it is, but it's gonna suck worse for me personally if I actually knew them. Road ID is also something to consider: http://www.roadid.com/Common/default.aspx . I'm about to cross the country myself, and ride alone unless I see others. May use endo or spot too...Thanks!
Spot is best for use in areas without cell reception. I have used one in the past when riding (motorcycles) in remote desert areas and also paddling off the coast, out of cell range. When you are in cell range, Spot doesn't make as much sense. Word to the wise... having had to push the button... don't rely on Spot alone if you can help it. Spot is a great tool, but cell/live communication is FAR better. If possible... push the button AND also send someone to find a cell signal. I used to scoff at RoadID, but not any longer.... I almost always ride with friends. Then I realized that all those riding buddies have MY cell number, but they have no clue how to contact my family if need be. I have family numbers and medical record/insurance info on mine.
Interesting. I keep my calling cards in my wallet. I think first responders know to look in there I'll laminate one with additonal contact numbers just in case. Thanks.
