Well that one is off my bucket list! What a great event and well done! I had a great time in the pain cave for 5.45 minutes, Proud to see my son kill it at 4.54.. I think that makes for the best time for under 16 or under 18. Not sure yet we will have to see the results. A BIG Thanks to all the people that help put on the event. It takes a lot of work and help form so many people to put it on. How about Tinker! That guy is one of the best ambassadors the sport has ever seen! Can't wait till next year!

    Not sure where to start,

These are all great reviews, Jealous i did not get to register properly to be official part of such great Venue. Meeting tons of people, every-time i said good morning - everyone responded good morning/hello. I have never seen so many Volunteers willing to help anyone at all times. To cover so much ground and put in so much effort at the same time. All the vehicles up and down the mountain and not one got in the way of the riders.

Aid stations were helpful, i top off one water bottle at Peak and VQ/CC station, where i had a good conversations with Gene. He was looking stream line, like a rocket ready to take on the mountain.. He also offered or suggested to knock out VQ. I guess i had decent times all around, but the little ones at home held me back that of time frame, Thanks G.

I have to admit and give props to my favorite group of people/station (here it comes) that of the Entrance of HJ. WOW, i will do this course all over again just to meet these guys again. I had no race # and i was asking tons of questions due to the fact i have never done HJ. Most friendliest and full of information, not once where they a smart ass or told me to get out of the way. I know i was asking too many questions and i know for a fact i was in the way of the entrance of HJ. They treated me as one of their own, as a registered rider. Too bad i did not get name's, male and female with WS shirts, male had a fishing type hat, glasses and a beard- i think. Thank you !!

Got a chance to see roxy and aviatrix and say hello, looking for others but did not see them. Chris was one of them, i started 6:30sharp and did not see him, he must of been on hes A game that day. My personal best performance could of been better, everything changes being endurance course format. Carrying 10+lbs pounds of h2o and calorie intake puts a swing on things. Next year could carry lot less and use the stations to my benefit. Completed the CC was a great accomplishment none the less.

So, some pride and joy goes to my,

5th overall on Vision Quest loop and back to Black Star in 5:53:02 Total of 54.4miles and 9,262ft - Witch means starting @ Christmas tree lot and back to Christmas tree lot VIA legs, no shuttle. KOM is 5:19, maybe next time =) No cramps and felt i got stronger 3/4 or towards the end. I may of had another 10 or 20miles in me. As of this morning, with all the Nutrition and muscle recovery i have been consuming i feel strong but feel i need rest (if that makes sense).

In closing, to any one who has not participated in this Event,

Yes you are and have been missing out. I have a full 10year resume in Motorcycle Road racing for so many years and i have yet to have participated in something better than this. Racing in Texas, Utah, Nor-Cal or Vegas did not come close or cheaper (of course) than this Event..

Thanks Everyone for the hard work and effort.

    M.

In 2008, 15 year old Janzten Oshler finished in 4:49:18. Still your son would've been top 10 at any age, that year or many of other years prior. Nice job!!

Anytime Mario. It was great to meet you. I knew that was you right away when I saw you rode up at Black Star. I'm glad you had a great experience yesterday and I look forward to seeing out there next year killing it.

and Mary(Never Tires). Both VQ vets and great all around people you'll ever meet on the trails and else where.

Btw, Mary won the Women's Solo 24 hrs of Adrenaline at Hurkey Creek back in Sept 2008, but you wouldn't know it because she is so humble

My first WS event and I finished around 5:51 ride time but I believe i'll have around 6:10-6:20 ET. So I didn't get under my ET goal of six hours, but I also didn't cramp or crawl out of HJ like I thought I would. I met some awesome people along the way and have some great respect for the WS on making this epic ride safe, and memorable.

I looked up last year's ride report to see how it compared with this year's...now that I'm a year older and supposedly wiser.

Did I have enough training this year to make a clean crack at a sub-5 hour time after missing it last year by seconds? Didn't think so as I had been focusing on building speed and power for the shorter races and rides, not to mention not doing so well on a Holy Jim Up and Back few weeks ago. Was supposed to be the Peak via Holy Jim out and back but not so much for me. And I bailed on the WHT-Wall-Trabuco recon loop that followed it.

Then I broke some cardinal rules:
    1) I decided I needed as much help as I could get climbing, so instead of my bulletproof rims and wheels, I decided to use the carbon-race wheels...only after the descents and the wheel's survival would I know if it paid off. I changed from a 2.25 Fastrack to a 2.25 Captain on the front...Friday night.
    2) I installed an XX1 32t crank and new 11-36 cassette...Friday night.

I even decided to forgo my usual Friday night cocktail, opting for a diet coke instead of a couple of Margaritas.

Nothing like mixing up the routine.

At least the new tubeless tire didn't lose air overnight when I checked it at 4am Saturday.

Found a bunch of people I see all the time and some that I haven't seen very often, and then we were off like a herd of turtles through the weird mixture of humidity, fog, and dust hanging in the air when it didn't stick to everything else. The weather turned out to be pretty good, considering the alternatives (rain, wind, heat), and the fog/overcast meant that unless you were computer watching, you could never look up and see the Peak waaaaaaaaaaay off in the distance.

Determined to go at my own pace and not get caught up in the race to Beeks and what I consider the halfway point of the 1st climb, I settled into my own pace knowing it was going to be a long day, and not seing any of my faster teammates.

About halfway along the Main Divide, I came upon my teammate spartticus (aka Nate) stretching his back out on the bike, early into his VQ. It looked like it was going to be a long day for him until he caught and dropped my like third period French a few miles later...the back loosened up enough to power on through. He'd end up finishing VQ in around 6:29...bad back and all.

Descending MW, I was shocked that only two people passed me...last year it was like 10.

Awesome support from the Team at the MW-Maple aid station as the bottles were ready for the hand-off and everything was set to keep me going.

Climbing Maple, I settled into another rhythm, catching some and getting caught by others, not wanting to really burn myself out before the final push to the peak and enjoying sunshine and the view of the clouds rolling over the ridge lines and filling the valleys below. The final pitch up the peak I still felt good, so downshifted a few gears and spun my way up it.

Then the fun began, as I'm not really known for any sort of speed on the downhill. This year, though, I didn't slam my seat all the way to the top tube and only walked 1/3 of UHJ...and slashed 2 minutes off my time. Then on LHJ, getting "pushed" by one of my faster descending teammates on a SS: "Its easier if you go faster", and what seemed like fewer hikers than last year, slashed over 6 minutes off of that time.

The most dangerous part of the day was avoiding the cars on the Trabuco descent that seemed indifferent to the impossibility of racing a Honda CRV around a slower SUV...I had to lock up completely to avoid going into the grill when that maneuver left no room on the road for anyone else. I spun the rest of the way down and finished in 4:47...easily beating my 5-hour goal. Oh, and the XX1 with a 10-speed 11-36...no dropped chains, shifting issues, and didn't run out of gears on either end. Wheels survived, and the change in front rubber gave me the MW-HJ confidence.

All-in-all, a pretty damn fine day, with PR's all around for friends and teammates, who still achieved their goals despite the expected difficulties during the ride...including that SS'er that, after finishing, pulled the still-warm cheeseburger wrapped in aluminum foil and proceeded to chow down with a smile on his face.

Kudos to all, and see you all next year.

50 did not start the VQ. 175 were able to register so that is almost 1 out of 3 people that registered did not start the race. I understand that injuries happen and people get sick, but that seems like a very high ratio!

So my question is.......if you started at 6:30 like you stated the other night.....descending Motorway, UHJ/LHJ, Trabuco....how many registered riders did you get in the way of? Especially Motorway. If you are as fast as you say you are, that puts you on MW within the masses. To do the time you claim, you would have had to fly down MW.

J, Mario has only been riding about 8 mths and is incredibly strong and fast. I agree, and understand where you are coming from but his excitement for the sport is infectious. I have no doubt he'll be riding it next year and will def be competition - make him pay extra for getting in my way...lol

Your mileage and elevation sound like the Counting Coup, definetely not Vision Quest.

I can't believe there was only 10 SS riders in the Coup. And I'm pretty sure one of the (cough-DAVE-cough;)) wussed out and brought gears.

It's simple.....you were not a registered participant. Like I told you the other night, you are not entitled to any aid at the aid stations.

Common courtesy to not get in the way of registered riders. Slower riders hear someone come up behind them and move over or stop, not wanting to impede a faster rider......only to have that rider not even be part of the event. You wouldn't go out and poach he LA Marathon, or jump into the middle of a set of waves during a surf contest you didn't sign up for.

How would you have felt if I got in your way and slowed you down at the Harding TT if I wasn't even a participant.....rather decided I would go out and see how fast I was on your race day.

Really Sorry about this, being new at it, just wanted to join some of my friends and meet new people. Having said that, late last year i never heard of such event when registration opened, that is why i was UN-able to register. I know that is not anyone's fault but my own.

If there is anything i can do to smooth this out, please let me know and point well taken

    M.
