Looking around at alternative options for wheelsets for my Specialized Epic 29er, I'd like to build up some Stan's, although they don't list a hub that is 142+ compatible. I currently run the stock wheels that shipped with the bike in 2010 and race on the Roval Carbon Wheels. The stocks have been pretty much beaten into submission (rim and hubs) and I'd rather not race the carbon fibers where I'm going to destroy them.

At Sycamore just SE of Poway this weekend I raced the Marathon and that first mile I kept cringing every time my 30 psi 2.25" tubeless tires bottomed out against the rims...each of the five laps.

Thread and internet search has revealed nothing, other than using stock 142 requires minor derailleur and brake adjustment when switching between the two, but no elaboration as to why, or why there is no adapter from 142 to 142+, nor is there an explanation that I can locate where the "+" differs from the standard, other than to have me use Specialized's line of wheels.

Rather than PM Ghisallo, with the large number of S-bikes out there, I thought this might be worthy of a wider discussion. I know I'm confused.

142+ is a Specialized only thing. Specialized 142+ frames can use a normal 142x12 hub.

    142 hub = Any 142mm frame (including 142+)
    142+ hub = Specialized 142mm only

142+ is different from 142 in only few ways. The flanges and the free hub body are bit further out to the right. It will make slightly more evened tensioned wheel. And you will need to adjust the drailleur and the brake abit when you switch between wheels.

Thanks...I always ride my "normal" wheels as much as possible...and even then the minor brake adjustment that occurs when switching between 142+ rears is a little bit of a pain. I'll get a buddy's 142 and some calipers and look at where the measurements are...if its a standard limiter screw adjustment and barrel adjustment for the rear derailleur, I'm ok with that.

Then when the 142+ wheels fail in a few years, I'll swap over and do 142 all around.

Just a load of mis information about the 142 plus hubs on the web.

I have joined just to put it right. I have just got a brand new old stock epic 2012 frame. It has Roval 142 plus hubs.

I googled for hours and everyone says the same. The hub flange is further out so is the cassette.. This compared to the 142 hubs..

Well not true the 142 plus hub is 144 mm across.. All the posts on all the forums have a specialized drawing with dotted lines showing 142 and 142 plus the same width. The flanges and cassette further out.

No indication the hub is 2mm wider and no one else mentioned it either.. So i have added a photo of a top end 142+ roval straight pull hub next to a brand new dt240 j bend 142mm hub. As you can see the plus hub is 2mm wider.

When i tried the 240 hub in the frame its loos but tightens fine with the axle. The brake rotor lines up without adjustment. The gears/ chain line will not i imagine..

I am left wondering if a 145 mm hub would have fitted a a push now..

An old thread i know but it mattered to me..
