Located in the high desert, Hurkey Creek Park is situated 4 miles outside of Idyllwild, a quiet and picturesque mountain town. The venue offers a unique and exciting course with amazing scenery and exceptional camping facilities.

Actual Race Start for all categories: SATURDAY 12 NOON

With two events taking place at the park we are looking forward to seeing people more frequently as well as many new faces.

Be sure to register early, the campsites around the expo always go fast.

All spectators will be charged a $6 fee to enter and use the park facilites. Park staff at the entrance will collect monies to the park.

    Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Two events? I assumed that just meant an 8 hour and a 24 hour. Or is there some other event completely?

What a shame about this registration "glitch"

I can't begin to fathom how it's not a priority for their business to make sure people can sign up.

  7. $10 says, the good ol' USFS is given them issues! (So Cal) wutcha expect?
Don't knock em till the facts are on the trail, I mean table! So with that said pack your bags Cortez and Durango are only bout 12 hours away! A place where they encourage riding and have funds and people to maintain and build the trails...:)

But the event is scheduled. What does the USFS have to do with getting peoples' names in the books to sign up?

Sounds like it's time for the locals to take over and run this thing......or give the course a rest for a year or 2.

*Postponed* 24 HOA Hurkey Creek - We need your immediate feedback (course re-route)

just got this in the mailbox, maybe there are some locals with ideas? There are some killer trails out there, could be a better course if done properly, not sure on how they link up though.

one thing for certain though, 1/3 of course on the road is not a good idea for a MTB race IMHO, would really change the nature of the race.

Re: 24 Hours of Adrenalin Hurkey Creek September 2011

    Dear Team Captains,

We need your immediate feedback no later than end of day tomorrow.

We were informed from the USFS in Idyllwild that they will close the Hurkey Creek Climb, Coyote Run, and Missing Link effective immediately. Excerpt from The USFS:

"This decision was based on the State of California Water Board's (Santa Ana Division) analysis of sediment loading into the Hurkey Creek drainage. The Water Board stated that this area must be immediately mitigated and rehabilitated if the road/ trail system remains open. Given the time to properly implement NEPA and funding deficiencies we are experiencing we are unable to properly mitigate this request in the near future."

Since receiving the news from the USFS we have been working on an alternative course however this is not easy since the trail closures affect a critical part of our historic course.

We are reaching out to you, our customers, as we need feedback on what the next course of action should be. We are able to re-route the course from the Oak Tree through the small community of Bonita Vista and back on to Apple Canyon Road turning right at Ronald McDonald House. This would be approximately 3 miles of road riding to link the course back to the Hurkey Creek Campground.

Going by my trail map, they are eliminatingthe exfoliator, rage thru the sage, and tunnel of love. This pretty much kills the loop in my opinion, as you are left with nothing but climbs. I might be wrong, but eliminating the missing link and coyote run means you can no longer head down the exfoliator as you have no way of getting through to the rage thru the sage without using coyote run/creek climb.

I would get the city of Idyllwild involved. They have the most to lose ($$$) here.
Why can't the USFS do their thing after the race????
Now you know why I got out of Government work.......jerks

This is an event we can afford to lose. HOA does very little for their customers and shouldn't be in business any ways.

Again using the straw man argument (environmental concerns) to do what they want. Sometimes I think the Forest Service would be happier if they just kept all of us out of the forest. Hurkey Creek drains into Lake Hemet so what are they talking about...having to dredge a lake to remove sediment? Lake Hemet was built in 1895 and I would think it has been drained and cleaned out more than once during its life. Maybe they should think more about is fuel reduction because when that area burns the sediment it the creek will be a 1000 times worse than bikes crossing a blue line stream. Good God one would think we where asking to open pit mine out there.

This is interesting because they perform environmental analysis on an annual basis in May Valley for cycling events:
    http://data.ecosystem-management.org/nepaweb/nepa_project_exp.php?project=34930

Under NEPA, a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) means what it says- no significant impact to the environment.
If you look at the link above, they've performed this analysis and came to this conclusion in April 2011.

The issue here is with an order by the Regional Water Quality Control Board- an agency of the State of California (not federal, like USFS).

We are not getting the whole picture here; I don't think that a state agency has jurisdiction to regulate a federal agency.

So my question is: If the USFS performs NEPA analysis every year for these events (including 4 months ago), why would they be happy "keeping us out of the forest?"
