#1, it's NOT an race or even a "timed event". #2, there is an aid station at the 25 mile turn around point which is 12 miles into the ride. This means you would need enough water or fluids to get you there. The next would be in Caspers which is the turn around point for the 50 milers. There is also water in the O'Neill Park. I'm bringing 2 water bottles and a some Hammer gels.

As far as eating before the ride, for the past 3 years I went on a cup of coffee and a danish. I did the 50 miler each time. ;-)

In all seriousness, the key is to eat a good meal and hydrate the night before.

I haven't been riding long enough to give the advice, but I heartily second this ^^ I always eat two dinners, one carb loaded, one lighter (a couple hours later). This time I'll eat both carb loaded but just a bit less heavy than a full meal. Morning will be the usual oatmeal with whey protein (mixed in, try it!) and a banananana.

During the ride: switch off between PB gel and PB gel "chews" when convenient. I don't think there's any reason to overthink all this though, it's just a friendly ride! Take my diet with a grain of salt because I've hammered it into my head to just eat healthy and for high activity (I'm a roadie too, sorry  ).

It is, and it isn't. They are enforcing cutoffs for the 50 miler in three different places. The first one is at Dove Canyon at 10 AM, the second and third ones in the canyon of Caspers at 11:30 and 11:40 respectively. So if your goal is to finish the 50 miler, you have to move at least at 6 miles/hour.

Well what I mean is there are no podium finishes or any timing devices to record your finishing time. The cutoffs are there for a reason so that the volunteers aren't out there all day waiting for those to finish. If the sweeps catch up to you before you get to Caspers, you will be ask to turn around and start back.

I swept this ride back in 2008. When we got back to Cook's Corner, it was almost dark and everyone was gone, including the food.

Anybody that does Rwanda like a race should be pelted with Gu packets and forced to read the definition of "fun" aloud a million times.

Or just show up at 9 to ride instead of 7. I don't think they will hold that against you. But you might as well try out the 50 and see how it goes.

A buddy of mine is renting an Ibis from a store that shall not be named to ride the 50 on. He broke his wheel this past weekend and may not have it ready for the ride.

First off, I’m sorry to hear that you got hurt and I hope you are okay for this Saturday. As for the Rock n’ Road ride, I have no idea what was going on. Yes, this was the ride that started at Rock N’ Road. I was not having the best day and had stopped a couple times to fiddle with my seat and make some other adjustments so I was a bit behind and actually rolled up on the sweeper who was fixing a flat on his bike. He was in RnR garb and stated that he was the sweeper and immediately I was wondering why he was not in the back where he belonged. He said to “just follow the trail” and he would catch up. Unfortunately, there were multiple forks up the road and nobody was sure which way to go and everything fell apart from there. I stopped to mess with my shock and the sweeper pedaled past full speed while asking me if I was okay. I could have screamed that I was on fire and it would have made no difference because the guy was gone before I could answer, and that was the last I saw of him. This happened within the first few miles. I could not believe he abandoned people either and believe me I was PISSED! It is completely inexcusable. Is anyone from that Rock N’ Road on this forum?

Really looking forward to the ride. It’s my first one and I think it will be a fun experience.

You can borrow my Medium Uzzi if you want. It has an air shock and an adjustable fork and it's a 2x9!

Not all Sho Air guys/gals are of the same team. There are the Pro/Expert Sho Air like Manny, Sid, Johnny O, Pua, the Bostrom Bros. They get paid to wear the kits.
    http://team-shoair.com/team.asp

There is the Sho Air/Sonance Masters Cycling http://visionvelo.com/team.htm

Then there are the those who pay to wear to them. http://www.teamvelosport.com/ More of a race club than a race team. There are over 800 members. From the website: "Team VeloSport attracts experienced riders and racers as well as beginner and recreational cyclists who are looking for great, scenic rides that only Southern California can provide."

As you can see, not all the same "Sho Air" so it would be unfair to paint them all with the same brush, but I can see why most would if you don't know the difference.
