Wow, do you have maps like these for other places like Laguna? These are fantastic.

Had the whole park to myself last night, not a soul in sight. Up Goat across the ridge to the Anaheim hills trail to Deer back up to the ridge across Yucca, down to Bumblebee, across to Goat up to new Chutes and home.

Yes all the trails are two way. Personally, I try not to climb Barham Ridge (Chutes) but you can definitely go what ever way you want. The new "Chutes B" is a great way to get partially to the "top".

Check it out. I wouldn't want you to shy away because of the 3B's. I see that you said you ride "some" Aliso. Does that mean that you haven't climbed Mathis or Cholla in Aliso? Mathis to me is definitely tougher than the 3B's. And I think Cholla is harder as a whole than any two B's in Oaks. The second "B" does gets pretty tough towards the top but it's a short push. You can always cheat at the bottom and take Bumblebee off to the right.

I don't ride laguna very often. I do have a bunch of GPS tracks of Aliso that I could build into a network, but nothing really on the El Morro side. If I have some time, I will put something together this weekend.

FYI, I use Topofusion mapping software, with the maps set to a 1:24000 topographical overlay on aerial photographs with shaded relief. The tracks are color coded according to map elevation.

With the recent changes can anyone recommend the ideal type of bike for riding at Santiago Oaks?

Nothing for the time being......the park will probably be closed a while until it dries out.

After that anything that can climb, will work.....no need for a big travel bike.....anything more than 5" or so is verging on overkill for most of the trails.

Yes, Hans is the Michaelangelo of MTB; the trails are a work of art- keep up the great work. It makes a great park even greater! Now if we can get some NO EQUESTRIAN signs put up I'll be a happier camper!
The 4 tabletop jumps near the end of Barham Ridge looked good from a distance, but after hitting them a few times, they got smaller and smaller; more of a brake checking exercise than airtime, but what the hey, at least someone is actually putting jumps on the trail and they are very much appreciated!
HANS RULES!!!! Sehr Gut Mein Freunde!!!!

    Couldn't sleep last night

Insomnia + not enough riding = the attached map. I took the .kml from Cilantro13, dropped it into Google Earth, and put something together in OpenOffice that might be the start of a decent trail map. Looking at it now, I reailze I've got some color coding wrong--the fire roads behind the dam, and that connector from Taco to the Bs, for example. But I'd also take inputs on the following:

*Historical Trail Names. I used the OCParks published names, though I don't like them, to minimize confusion. But I want the record to reflect the historical names as well.

*Trail ratings. This will never be perfect. I pulled the color code from Mammoth's trail map, I'm not sold on it. I came up with the term "ungroomed all-mountain" to describe Hawk, though these days it's relatively groomed. But it's certainly less groomed than Chutes.

*Missing routes-note the lack of a line for El Camino.

*Mileages-does the map need them? Should there be a second page with detailed descriptions?

    *Anything else missing?

    g-dub, that is fantastic work!
You're hired to do trail maps for all of our local areas. Of course it is an unpaid job, but I promise to click "Thanks" every time you post a new map!

It's amazing what you can do in 2 hours with Google Earth, OpenOffice, and poached kml files...thanks to Cilantro13. If someone's got a GPS file of El Camino I'll add it to the next revision.

    PDF format

Here it is in PDF. Expect to need a new printer cartridge when you're done.

Edit: I poked around with GIMP, added El Camino.
