First job (1971) was throwing papers Second job (1972) was working at a drive thru dairy (anybody remember Jessup Farms) in Compton. Was held up at knife point 2nd week....scared the beejeezuss outtame!
first job was working at Toys R Us- minimum wage, summer of '94. I was a cashier and stocked shelves. That was the toughest job there. the cushy jobs were the dudes in the back who would every now and then have to wheel giant playground equipment or 500 lbs of sand out to people's cars, and the dude who sat in the booth and handed out the video games after you paid for them. Sometimes we'd goof around and push each other down the aisles in the Fisher Price car, throw nerf footballs over many aisles to each other, etc. I will say that working there opened my eyes to the world of MILFs.
My first job was at Kartopia in Tustin in the 1970's. It was a go-kart track. I stood in the middle of the track and yelled "No bumping!" at the kids zooming around the figure 8.
I do apologize for being that ass trying to hit your cart with golf balls from the driving range. My first job was working at Babies 'R' Us. Since then, I've been in retail ever since and I'd say it taught me the value in customer service. Interestingly enough, I was making more money at the time compared to my friends and while I didn't know it at the time I met my future wife. Awww the memories of biting my tongue when angry mothers would snap at the littlest things.
Lifeguard / Swim Instructor at a public pool in Santa Ana. I got to use the pool during off hours - it was a great way to stay in shape between swim and water polo seasons.
Thanks! I got behind the wheel of a masarati, but I liked the jaguar xk the most. The sound that car makes... It's pretty neat to read where you all got started. Strange that years down the road I'll be looking back on what I started doin just yesterday. Hopefully then I'll still be driving nice cars around the hills keep the stories coming!
Age about 10, taking a lawnmower door to door and seeing if I could cut their lawns for them. To ensure that I leaned how the real world worked my father leased the lawnmower to me until I could afford my own mower. After school in junior and high school cleaning up constructions sites. High School summer vacations ranch-hand on Nash Ranch Philo, CA. Dean
My first job was at Edwards working at the box office. I was making minimum wage at the time ($6.75/hr with only health insurance). The job was super easy. I got 'let go' because I got scheduled on the day of my college orientation... school came first and I didn't show up. I requested the day off as well stating that it was my orientation, BASTADS!
After my father took a job for a bicycle importer and distributor in 1975, we moved to Torrance, Ca and rent/family needs was higher than in our previous location. Being bike people, my father would bring home replacement wheels to be built and trued. So, starting at age 10 I would build the wheels at 25 cents a pop (decent money for a kid as I could easily lace a wheel in 10 minutes) and my father would do the final tension and truing. If we wanted a new TV, my dad would bring home a hundred wheels or so, me and my brother would lace them up in the garage listening to music or watching a ball game on a little black and white TV and make some decent $, plus learning the ins & outs of wheel building and truing. At 2 years old my sister could even lace the 1st half of a wheel!!!
Dude, some of those guys were surgical. I remember the first time I got hit, it sounded/felt like a gunshot. I also remember when my rear tire got stuck in the sand. When I got out to try and push, golf balls were landing a few feet from me (from 200+ yards out!!!). I remember running away really really fast.
I was a clean up boy at a local countertop shop min. wage in 1976. Now I design cabinets and millwork.
At age 9 I mowed 3 of my neighbors yards to save up for a bike to go to the orange y bmx track. My dad let me use the lawnmower in trade for buying the oil, and filters for maintenance and gas I would ride my huffy mt. bike to the gas station to fill up my small gas can. After that at around 13 or 14 I got a job under the table after school at a local autoparts distribution warehouse pulling orders and stocking shelves. I thought I was loaded making 5 bucks an hour During highschool I made money for a brief period in the male adult film industry! [j/k] First full time job out of high scholl I became a ruff neck/worm on a drill rig.
Me too. Man that sucked. Rain or Shine, 7 days a week, no vacation days or holidays, sick or not. I had to get up at like 4:30-5:00am, fold the papers. If it was raining you'd have to put them in plastic bags. On Sundays I'd have to make multiple trips because on that day those damn news papers are 2-4 times bigger with all the coupons, adds and crap. Then once a month I'd have to go out and collect. Now that is compete B.S. to send a kid door to door to collect money. Besides the dangers of a kid doing that alone it wasn't like you could do it one time a month because people wouldn't be home, claim they don't have the money, or they just wouldn't answer the door. Plus, if you ever wanted to go on vacation you would have to find your own replacement and pay him out of your own pocket. Having said all that, it did teach me responsiblity and put $70-$90 bucks in my pocket each month which was a ton of money for a kid in the early 80's. I was able to buy a bad a$$ FMF Foiler BMX bike worth about $500 with my earnings. That is probably equivalent to $1000+ BMX bike today.
