Bring them just in case. I prefer platforms myself on my DH bike.

I ride a Heckler.....not really a downhill bike. I am guessing though since I dont have to pedal much, or at least am hoping not to that platforms will be better.

I am nervous that I am going to get up there and not be prepared. I hate not being prepared.

FWIW: Neil (1x1clyde) who ALWAYS rides clipless, said more than once he should have brought platforms..

    Have fun!

    It depends.
Do you like to crash as a result of being clipped in?
Do you mind being clipped in when you crash?
Which shoe allows you to dab faster?
Which shoe is more comfortable to walk around in?
Which pedal allows you to jump over the bars as the bike is endoing? (I have yet to master that one)

    I ride XC clipless.
    I race BMX clipless.
    I ride DH on platforms.

Depends on how well you ride with the flats. I like them for the ability to dab easily (which looks like it'll help up there). I do DH in clipless too though, but mostly where I'm going to be pedaling a lot or trying to go fast (like racing).

+1. pizza is good, and you can get a lot for a good price. definitely a good way to roll after a long day of riding.

    yeah...well...those scenerios are real.
If you know how to ride a bike better with platforms, I think you're better off using them. But that's just my opinion. There is value to racing with clipless pedals, but I don't see much benefit to them for rec riding.

Bring both types of pedals and shoes, and try them both.

I find it benefits the control I have on my bike more so for rec riding....while racing DH I was more on the edge and didn't feel as comfortable...
I also don't have mine cranked down...

If you're comfortable riding w/ clipless do it...
If you have no problems switching back and forth between flats and clipless go w/ whatever feels best....
It's all about your(individual rider) comfort level...

Since you have them bring them both...

I ride clipless everywhere except the DH bike Platforms and 510's is where it is at and with the 510's you might as well be clipped it

I Didnt know they made 510's in GIANT size

Speaking of 510, how do their shoes fit... Is their sizing the same as shimano?
Like if i wore a 10.5 in shimano shoes, would it be a 10.5 in the 510's?
    Or is their sizing different?
    anyone? thanks

My shoes are some very comfy lace up Oakleys which I can just take the cleat of and use with my platforms.

I ended up buying some sunline platforms today. I am going to ride them the next couple of days to see how I like it.

    2 questions..

I always thought a dab was something you did with hair gel....so what is a dab?

What are 510's? are they a type of platforms?

I'm sorry to say that I've never found any Oakley shoe that works well on platform pedals (sorry Eric!).

A dab is when you have to quickly put your foot down to prevent you from falling - in other words, it's the same as hair gel: just a dab will do ya!

5:10 (or Five10 http://www.fiveten.com/) is a brand of shoe. Thanks to its soft rubber compound, it's the absolute best shoe for platform pedals.

I just put new pins in my old Azonic flats. Last time there I was riding the SPD clips/resin cage flat combos, but I never clip in going downhill anyway, so it was a bit of a waste. And yes, I did have trouble staying on the pedals in a few spots.

on a similar note, I still need a ride there and back for myself, my bike, and a large duffel of gear. I was hoping to leave early friday so i can get a half day in there, and get a half day sunday morning as well. That, of course, is dependent on whoever I end up getting a ride from though.

    Go with platforms.
I consider myself a confident "clipped" in rider but there were moments in sections that I could not get my foot engaged again, that sucked!
As of this evening my Slopestyle is now sporting platform pedals:bang:

You can grab a ride with me.

I am not sure if I am leaving Friday AM or PM though because of work.

Question to anyone.......Should I run 2.5 front and read or will front only be sufficient?
