    I'm currently on my 2nd 305.

The first one had battery issues and would not hold a charge longer than a few hours. That eventually degraded down to zero hours.

I paid the $99 flat fee for repair and I received a refurbished one in the mail.

Fast forward 8 months and my 305 starts shutting off mid-ride - apparently when the trail gets rough. What's worse is that when it shuts off, some data corruption occurs. For example, coming DOWN from Cocktail Rock, I burned 64,316 calories.

    So..pay another $99 to get my 3rd 305...so go for the 705 for $425.

Any battery issues for you 705 users yet? Or any other bad bugs?

I'm on my 4th 305 in two years. Each time it's been handled pretty quickly under warranty, and I've had a replacement in about a week. One of the guys I ride with has had a 705 for nearly six months, and so far no issues. Kinda useless extra features unless you buy the garmin maps.

However, there's a free set of topo maps for california available at http://www.vr6.com/gps/map-dl.htm

I haven't tried the free map as I don't have a compatible GPS unit, but I've downloaded it for future use in case I do get one and the free map disappears. I'd like to hear if anyone has used this map on a 705.

    +! :bang:

The free maps I linked to in the previous post are for use IN the unit, on a Garmin GPS with mapping display, not on a PC after the ride.

Thanks for the link steve... I'll try these maps in my 705. and let you know.

I have noticed 1 bug in my 705... if I have the map on the display and I'm riding, eventually it will crash mid ride and need to be restarted... doesn't happen if I leave it on the data display screen (time, speed, lap, HR, etc).

    Battery life has been great.

Ok, so I updated the firmware on my device... one of the claimed fixes is the map freezing bug... so that should fix my only problem with the unit.

The map above loads and displays fine in my 705... haven't used it yet though, I don't think there's any street/trail names in it.

is there a way to reset the Garmin with it off? Like a reset button?

I pulled the unit off the computer, display read "charing complete" or whatever it normally says. However after i pulled it off it would not turn on and when i plug it in to the computer, nothing either.

EDIT: Just tried the wall charger and a different cable, nothing

Hold down the Lap and Mode buttons down at the same time to do a soft-reset.

Hold down the Mode, Reset/Lap and Power buttons at the same time for a few seconds, then try it. If it's frozen that should reset it.

So I got to use my Garmin Edge 305 for the first time on Sunday. I love all the information that it provides for you, it comes in very handy. I had a Cateye before and when I rode Fullerton it usually shows 11.3 miles but when I used my Garmin doing the same course it showed 11.03 miles. Has anyone else noticed this on theres?

i believe because the garmin uses gps it is impacted by vertical accent/decent. when u upload to computer should make adjustments and be more on mark. that said your cats eye could be off a bit based on how your programed it for tire circum

I would say this is pretty normal. You have to remember that these are training devices not geographical survey instruments. That said they are relatively accurate, but not always precise especially across devices.

As far as training purposes go, it doesn't really matter if you incorrectly measure a course by .2 miles as long as that incorrect measurement is consistently incorrect on the same measurement device.

And for my money, the Garmin is a superior training device, simply beacuase of the wealth of imformation it provides. Before I owned the Garmin I used a Cateye on the bike and a Suunto heart monitor/altimeter which was nice but it only allowed me to analyze averages where the Garmin allows me to review data on a point by point basis.

Bottom line, they are both great training devices but not precise survey equipment. That said however, I would say that the Garmin is probably the more precise of the two.

Pretty normal for the Garmin, it samples once every 6 to 7 seconds and measures in a straight line from point to point, where you might actually be on a turn and traveling a greater distance. Remember in math that the shortest distance between 2 points is a straight line? Same thing with G outs, ups and downs, left and rights.... a wheel sensor measures actual of what you roll, a GPS unit averages what you travel, and a lot can happen distance wise between 6 or 7 second measurement points besides an assumed straight line.

don't even get me started on how inaccurate the calorie count is on the Garmins... total junk feature the way they implemented it. It had me burning only 300 calories for a 3 hour climb... they calculate calories based on how fast you're traveling, not your heart rate... so if you're only going 3-4 mph up a steep climb, it thinks you're taking it easy and not burning any cals.... stoopid, it's not even the slight bit useful.

(and this is on a 705)
