Default Im installing my Sram X-9 RD

can anyone do me a huge favor and go out and take close shots of your Dérailleur from the front and inside close to the RD hanger, I'm just trying to make sure I got this sucker on right...new to all this so I don't want to crash and burn because I'm not building right..I will love you for all my days(not really, but what else can I say or do)

The online manual has close up shots.

See quick starts.

The B-Tension Screw (The little black allen screw towards the rear) should be resting on the little stop on the derailleur hanger.

The light gray part should rotate. It should stop when it hits the dark gray part.

Edit: Sorry, the other way around. The RD should rotate until it hits the screw.

Sounds like you have it installed like how I have it illustrated.

You want to make sure the stopper is sitting on the der hanger as shown in the manual. If not it will swing too much.

I recommend Zinn of MTB Maintenance. It's really good.

Also check out Sheldon Brown's site: http://sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html

He has lots of good tips and instructions.

If you've got any kind of local bike shop around, never hurts to drop it by them. They may make a comment here and there, but just take it as a learning experience.

the diagram looks funny because it is shown from the non drive side (left) of the bike. that might be what is confusing you

Gotta learn somehow! Just make sure it's good to go before going out for a long ride.

Good suggestions on the book and Sheldon's site.

Another good site to czech out: http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=64

The pictures are a bit outdated, but the concept hasn't changed.

The best day in my biking life is the day I decided to start doing the wrenching on my own bike. I was esscared of the RD for the longest time until I bought a new one and decided to install it myself. Now I do just about everything myself. Good times.
