Default flipped stem??

something i have been curious about...maybe some of you can help me.

i ride a kona king and decided to flip the stem after my purchase. the stock setup's cockpit feel was way too slack and made climbing difficult. i had a tough time keeping the front tire down during the climbs. the flipped stem gives me a much better cockpit feel but i was curious if that has any affect on steering, etc.

i wonder if i were to go to a stem with a lower angle and flat bar as compared to a riser if i will gain anything? it would put me in a similar position, i just don't know if it will help or not.

thanks.

I use a "flipped stem" on my Scalpel and it works well for me. Because the geometry and the length of the Lefty fork, riding with a positive, or even flat, stem put me too upright.
I ride with about an inch and a half (negative) difference between the saddle and the handlebar and my bike handles very well.

Using a flipped stem does a few things. First of all, it quickens steering. Next, it lengthens your bike. Lastly, it's tougher on your back after a while. I raced a flipped stem for years and it was great. Now that I'm a little older, it's too much for my back to handle, so now I use a 5 degree rise.

I flip the stem on my big bike when I'm out on longer stuff, with plenty of climbing, only way I can keep the front end down!!
