Default thinking about rebuilding my wheelset

I love my King hubs so Im keeping those but can any one recommend a good rim and spoke combo...of course being strong and light are key points. Also keep in mind that these will eventually go on my AM bike.

I'm kinda diggin the Syncros rims... If not that, then maybe go with the current equivalent of Mavic 819's or so. Some may not like those because they aren't as beefy as 823's, but those are Justin's DH rims, so I think it may be overkill for AM.

Aside from that, no idea.. my 26" King hubs are on Olympic ZTR's

I'll vote for either the Mavic 819 or the DT Swiss 5.1. The 5.1s are easier to build, weigh a bit less, and they are wider, which is better for wider tires.

Im not a huge guy so I assume the DTswiss will do for my needs even though Mech says they are soft. Im not all crazy on my rides, just want something light and durable and up to date on tech as the rims I have now are pretty old...

Stan's Arches. Or Flows if you want a wider rim? Pricey rims though but my 26" arch set are holding up pretty well so far. But that's on a cross country bike, no jumps at all.

There was a known production run of the 6.1 that was soft, however, that was a long time ago, and I don't know if the 5.1 was also included.

Hopefully mechman will chime in, but I'm assuming the conclusion that they were soft was based on finding flat spots or dents in the rim. This is most likely caused by under-inflated tires (of course one could argue that they run the same pressure and the same tires on all rims). But it really only takes one rock or sharp edge hit just wrong to cause a flat spot. I have not had any problems or experienced any flat spots on my 5.1s (I use them on my hardtail 4x bike and my Intense 6.6 AM bike).

I have not used the Stans rims, so I can not comment on them.

I'm loving my 5.1s so far. I ain't the lightest rider around, and they're holding up like champs.

I have a soft set of 6.1... they are soft have they fixed the problem? I'd like to get my FR/DH wheelset relaced to the new hoops if they have.

It was the 6.1 's that were getting flat spots all the time. My 5.1's have been holding up really well. I highly recommend them.

The Mavic 823s are good rims for a DH bike (I use them on my M3), but I think they're overkill for most AM use. Like overkill? Great, you can haul all the extra weight you want. I'm lazy (and out of shape), so I haul the least bit of weight I can safely get away with. At 200 pounds, I'm not exactly a lightweight, either. However, although I ride "hard," and jump everything in sight, I may ride more smoothly than others. Having said that, if I want, I can destroy about anything pretty quickly - especially rims.

Default 5.1's here...

I'm running DT 5.1's on DT 340 hubs with no problems. They are great and are the perfect width for 2.35 tires. I'm running a Nevegal front and Small Block rear in that size.

Hey Down,

Sounds like you're more of a mellow rider than the guys giving you advice here. I'd say go with the 819's. They'll be plenty strong for you and you can always go tubeless without a kit.
