Me I would go with Formula Brakes, Marzocci Fork and hand built wheel set staying away from proprietary spokes. Bike shops outside our area go not carry much stock and it can ruin a roadtrip waitng for parts to be shipped. Many forks on the Turner board running King headsets on RFX's complain about creaking.
I just built up a RFX this week, let me know if you want to ride it before spending money. I am off work at 2pm and live in Laguna Beach. Dean

Maybe go with more reliable hubs. You could not go wrong with Hope 240 S hubs on 819 or maybe Stanz Flow rims. King ISO, and DT 240 S are also great hub choices. I agree with Steppy on the brakes. Ouro Puros would be lighter, quieter, and have every bit as good feel and power as the Hopes.

tell me more about the formula brakes. I've been running CK headsets for awhile now and never had any issue. Agreed on the spoke issue but you have to check out theis wheelset, its unreal light. |

I suppose it depends on what you're going to do with this bike. If it's your one bike and you won't be going real big (yet, don't forget the yet
) you should be ok.I agree with the above on the wheels. I have Hope m4's and they're great brakes. It's nice that you can use the old style XT pads, they pull out from the top and have the best bleed system of them all imo. I've had no issues with King headsets but have heard of others experiencing creaking problems. I would have reservations buying King again. If you're going to be going bigger than 3-4' I'd forget the air fork and lightweight wheels. Coil fork and handbuilt wheels would be a better choice. You may look on e-bay - Magura was blowing out wheelsets dirt cheap. They were private label DT hubs hand laced to Mavic UST rims with DT comp spokes. ~ $300 no tax. 240 hubs/819 rims or freeride hubs/823 rims. In the end, I'd gladly pedal an extra pound or two on a 6" bike for the extra durability. At the risk of hijacking this thread, I think we need to put together an STR Turner ride soon. Congrat's on the new rig. C

Not much to say except they are excellent brakes. As Tani said lighter and quite.

First of all, congrats on your decision...I like Turners a lot
Frame: RFX (which shock?) Fork: Fox Float 36 RC2 (do you care about adjustable travel?) Headset: CK (King headsets suck ass. I would personally go with a Cane Creek Solos, which also come in swell colors) Wheels: Crossmax SX (I would not go Mavic prebuilt and you can easily get custom nice wheelset for the money you would pay for this. perhaps your shop isnt good at building wheels though...) Tires: Kenda Nevegal (I am not a fan of Kenda but to each their own. I personally find the Schwalbe Big Betty 2.4s to be perfect on such a bike. But your shop probably knows nothing of them and doesnt carry them) Bars: Eason Carbon DH bars (I hate carbon bars but enough people like these so go for it) Grips: ODI (of course!) Stem: Thompson (I like Hope better but of course Thomson rock too) Seat post/Seat: Thompson/Turner1 (of course Thomson post. saddle personal preference) Shifters: XTR Rapid fire (I think shimano sux ass compared to SRAM but again, personal taste. I would rather have X9 shifters anyday w/ XTR and X0 a total waste of money) Rear Derail: XTR Shadow Front Derail: XTR Chain: XTR (kewl) Crank: FSA Gravity light w/MRP LRP (kewl) BB: FSA Platinum pro Pedals: Mallet C Brakes: Hope M4 w/gold anodized caps and rotor carriers (kewl. I like Hopes a lot, especially the new stuff which I wish I had) Cassette: XT (kewl) Keep us posted! |

Sounds like a good build to me. I really like Fox forks. The wheelset should be fine, and might be slightly cheaper than a hand built / custom wheelset.
I also like my King headsets I might have to get one of the new 1.5's when they are available.. my stock Specialized headset ain't doing so well on my Demo 7...I don't have any issues with my Fox forks, my King headsets, or my prebuilt Mavic wheelset... FWIW, get the 08 Sunline grips when they come out. Unfortunately they aren't up on the site yet, but they were on all the Brodie's this weekend and they were AWESOME!!! Everyone was raving about them. I think they'll be big next year. |

Sounds like a typical Dave Turner story. I know a lot of people love his bikes, and I don't blame them, they're good, he's just a little off at times.

Its ok anyways......I will probably end up on a Ventana, Nicolai, or Knolly if I can afford it. I dont know the owner of Nicolai but Sherwood and Noel are THE COOLEST dudes for sure, hands down and they can have my business for sure. |
