xtr FR and RD (970 - rapid rise) with juicy 7's, so obviously I just need the shifters, no levers correct?
I would go with the XT rapidfire shifters but I like gear indicators for now the X.0 are a little too much $ right now, so the X.7's and x.9's look good for the price but those only work with SRAM derailleurs right? should I just suck it up and get the XT's? or is there a more suitable option? -this is my first build and this whole part here is confusing me, about to get worse when i have to figure out a cassette |

Even if it's rapid rise, it'll still work. It just goes to the "other" side when you're in the highest/lowest gear. |

FWIW, I freaked when Justin took my indicators off, but I don't miss them at all. Get used to not using them. Either way I still grab for an easier gear, whether I can see on an indicator it's as low as it gets or not. ![]() You'll learn to not really need to see. If you want an easier gear, shift into one. If you want a harder gear, shift into one. Doesn't matter if you can see what you are in, really... If you need to know, look down. Er...when it's safe to do so. ![]() |

They will work, but the rapid rise was suppose to be used with dual contol(shifter/lever). It will work, you just have to remember that the thumb will shift towards the low and the index will shift towads the high. I don't even look to see what gear I'm in. I just feel what's right and go!

I have both X0 and XTR 970. XTR may need more maintenance due to the smaller amount of cable it pulls compared to X0 but man is it worth it. XTR drivetrain and shifters is a world above X0. X0 is like the diesel of shifting, super reliable and efficient but clunky and slow. XTR is fast and precise - kind of the Porsche 911 of shifting. I'd have X0 on an all mountain type bike thats going to get down and dirty and take a beating and XTR on something for less frequent faster XC use. My 2c

In regards to the indicators...I consider myself a fairly experienced mountain biker. Having said that, I've never had a need to learn which direction those indicators move to represent what gears. In fact, I still don't really know. But here's what I do know, and the reason I don't care about them: If the gear is too hard or easy for the terrain, I don't need to look at an indicator to confirm this fact; I just shift. What does the indicator show that you don't already know?
