Default Suspension Seatposts?

What is your experience with suspension seatposts? Any recommendations?

I have a hardtail that I use as my backup bike. In less than a year, I've broken 2 seats, both shearing the metal bar under the seat off cleanly. I assume I'm sitting when I should be standing.

So....I'm thinking that spending a bit on a suspension seatpost will be less expensive than replacing the seat 2X per year.

Thanks!

I don't have one on my 2 HT, but I have ridden a bike that did and I can tell ya, I wish I had one, it's a nice ride, but it's a tough decision to go and replace the Easton carbon I have on the Rocky Mtn and the Thomson I have on my SS.

Here's a few:

Winger, I have the rockshox seat post and I love it. Its from 2001 and pretty heavy. Its compression bushings (elastimers) and has adjustment via a hex on the bottom. You can find them on Ebay for 25 bucks. No, they don't have them on Sale at Performance ... I have a shot of it on the zion in my gallery. I think it works pretty good, but you do get bob if it's not stiff enough.

http://weightweenies.starbike.com/li...nsionseatposts

Its the Rockshox mtb 27.2/350... I guess its not that heavy compared to everything else.

The suspension seatpost I had on a hardtail helped take the some of the sting out of the trail especially on rocky climbs and sitting in the saddle. You breaking your saddle on the climbs or downhills? This sounds stupid but you shouldn't be on the saddle at all if you're doing techy downhill or small drops. This would be even worse with a suspension seat post. Those things usually don't have any rebound dampening built into so they can eject you off the bike on a big hit. At least this was true with the old style elastimer suspension posts.

Maybe run a saddle with steel rails (instead of Ti) and a seatpost with a larger wider/longer rail clamp. Or maybe the Kore I-beam saddle/seatpost. I've heard good things about those and not to expensive.

I seem to remember the Whyte Ind. suspension seatpost has a an adjustable air spring, and not elastimers.

Good suggestions so far. I appreciate all the input.

Break #1 was on Main Divide somewhere between Beeks' and Motorway.

Break #2 was in Peter's canyon, somewhere between the top of Big Red & the lower dam, along the upper ridge.

Best I can tell, it was at a higher speed and I was probably sitting down to peddle & carry momentum up the next hill. I definitely stand when it gets technical. I weigh about 185 + gear and can't lose much more weight. Both seats were low end and had solid rails (steel? Aluminum?).

Pedal bob is an excellent consideration. I'm comfortable with the hardtail the way it is, and the suspension seatpost would strictly be to protect the bike seat.

my Thuddy kinda stiff. I don't notice any bob when pedaling. I have in mainly for the spine pounding hits. Also the Thuddy is designed to move in a lateral arch (sp?) not "up and down"

I have a Thudbuster Unipivot that I used on my hardtail for a while.
Works similar to the newer cane creek, but the nose of the saddle would tilt up when it compressed. I could control how active it would be by sliding forward and back on the saddle. It works great, but went the way of a Ti seatpost and suspension saddle for lighter weight.

I also use a Thuddy with my sir 9. It allows me to stay seated and pedal over rubble.

Pedal bob (kickback) can't happen with a hardtail, the BB and hub are always the same distance apart.

I rode the USE suspension seatpost in the Great Divide Race with no problems over 2000 miles. How's that for an endorsement? It's very easy to service yourself and you can buy the service kit from them as well. It does not bob when you pedal and REALLY takes the edge off bumps. Thar she is:

I have a thudbuster too. It worked pretty good on my ironhorse HT a while back. Now I'm thinking I might put it on my On-One Inbred, but the reba Race comes first

You can get different elastomers for your weight and desired springyness. Is that a word?
