It all depends on how many chainrings you have on the front. Most MTBs come with three chainrings... a three ring set up would require a long cage, but with two chainrings (many people lose the big ring in lieu of a bash gaurd) you could get a away with a long or medium. The advantage(as far as I know) to shorter cage derailleurs is less material to damage/bend/break.
