Default Five Spokes

Many moons ago when I rode BMX bikes, most of us had rims similar to the one below (sorry for the bad pic - it was the best I could find.)
I was curious why this style never took off for MTB rims. It seems like it would be a natural. I use to see sets offered, but I can't find any now.
I'm sure there's a good reason, but why aren't these types more popular?

Call JensonUSA, they had a tent there with a dealer who sold wheels like that. I forgot what the company name was called but I'm sure Jenson will carry their wheels.

they are very heavy. Think of filling your tubes with sand.

Default Spin...

I think the company was called Spin, and the wheels were far heavier than traditional spoked wheels, which limited their appeal. Every so often I will see someone riding on them, which makes me believe they are durable. I think the company went out of business.

There have been many variations of spoked mag wheels. As mentioned, most of them are heavy. But even with the added weight, they're all as flexy as a wet noodle. I used 20" Skyway Graphite Tuff Wheels on one of my BMX bikes for a while, and even those flexed a lot. The flex was mostly noticed in aggressive berms.

Discussed awhile ago. There's a local company called TAG doing them now. Sure, probably industructable, but these things are boat anchors and are very expensive. But they're out there if you want'em.

Right now, don't think these things are executed better than a well made hand built wheel.

Or even a hand built wheel made of hard wood.

That's already tubeless! And you'll never get a flat (tire)!

No flats, fast rolling, and supreme durability. Maybe be on to something here.

If I remember correctly they were made out of Graphite. Skyway Tuff wheels. I remember really wanting a pair.

the guy at the path that was doing all the tricks worked for a wheel company that made a product like that....skips my mind what it was called. But I think it was mainly for dirt jump. I think with the advancements in materials its kinda made the Mag wheel go the way of the Dodo.
