I need that tool apparently (not sure why though, because i can't figure out why you can't just put a hext key in there) I also need park tool BBT-19, however neither one of the local shops carries it, they can order it however. LBS would install my crankset for $15, but from yesterday's thread, it still makes sense for me to do it myself and have the tools for later on. i may order the park tool, but where do i find the Shimano one? from this tutorial: http://www.parktool.com/repair/readc...ner.asp?id=157 says tool from shimano is TL-FC35 |

It looks like you have the three piece XTR Crank Set. Putting an allen wrench into it will only turn the shaft and not loosen the retaining nut. The Park tool will loosen the actual retaining nut that holds the crank arm on.

what i must have missed in that tutorial is that yeah you can use the bbt-19, which no one seems to carry, or you can use the bbt-9, the hand wrench, which i believe is available in most places, i'll have to recheck that though.
I have had no luck in finding the Shimano tool however, so i'm just going to take my crankset (pre-assembled) up to the LBS and ask the wrench behind the counter if they have one they use, and to take my crankset apart with it. I went to h.s. with one of the guys there and he's been helping me out as of late, hopefully he'll do it again |

well now i'm just confused as to why in that tutorial it says NOT to remove the crank bolt after removing the cap.
I can't remove the cap (no tool obviously) so i took the nut out, everything disassembled, I put the spindle and bearing cups in (still need to tighten cups with bbt-19 + torque wrench), the rest just reassembles. Whatever. |

the problem is that the cap that retains the nut is plastic and any force applied to it will strip it. Basically it's there just to protect the threads. The tool you pictured can be threaded into the crank arm to help removal.
Good news is that you don't need to remove the plastic cap to install the arm, you only need to check that it's installed tightly, which you can use a pin spanner (or similar) here's shimano's tech link....hope it helps! http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/te...9830600538.PDF |
