HOWEVER, when I used to have a Forerunner 301 or whatever it was... the HRM *never* worked right. I probably put like 5 new batteries in the chest strap, got a new one from Garmin, and it never worked right. Friends of ours said to just return it to REI.

We were on a week long road trip to Moab/Fruita and the thing just flat out was driving me nuts. Justin was ready to back over it with the truck.

There was an REI in Grand Junction, so before checking into our hotel in Fruita we drove over one night.. I had the unit and the chest strap. No software, no charger, no box... said it had never worked right. Since they have your purchasing history in their computer they knew I'd gotten it at an REI. They took it back for full store credit. I bought their last Edge 305, which I faithfully used (and it worked AWESOMELY) up until I smashed the screen in. I've yet to send it back to Garmin, but when the battery on Justin's gets worse and I've saved up $50 I probably will

I had a 305 that would shut off during a ride. Frustrating enough to send it to Garmin but I used it anyway. One day the screen shut down so I knew it was time. When you go through the email system Garmin wil reply "You need a repair job that'll be $99 (or so)". I gave up on that and called Garmin, and said "My 305 shuts off, I want a warranty replacement." Got my RMA and a new 305.

Well after I found my 305 yesterday morning in the washer, on it's way to the dryer, I opened the rubber plug on the back and pured the watr out and left it in the sun for the balance of the afternoon. I plugged it in to the charger as the battery was fully discharged and rode with it last night in ALiso... Good news it seemed to work fine. Upon returning home I plugged it in and not only was my ride info from last night there, but all of the info since I last downloaded the ride info... Oh Yeah I am happy another 15 miles and 2175 feet of elevation last night and the damn thing works........... I hope that it keeps working

J Sims -congrats on the resurrection!
Thanks to everyone for the input and great links. Looks like it's prime time to nab a 305, since the reduced price puts it so close in cost to the 205. The 705 looks cool, but not at $550+ !

We seem to share the same taste in GPS units. My previous GPS was the Forerunner 301. Not bad for the price but it sure can't compare to the Edge 305.
