Default Cable disc brakes.

I need some help. I really want to go dual control, but I need to go super cheap. I am currently running Hayes HFX-9 Hydro brakes and Deore shifters with an Xt rear Mech and a LX front.

Are there any cable operated disc brakes that would be as good as my Hayes Hydros? I love that I have never had to adjust my brakes. Ever. And they always work. I don't want to shoot myself in the foot here. It's just that the dual control cable brakes are way cheaper...

Avid BB7's are probably the best cable disc brakes out...

Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly are "dual control" brakes anyway? I've seen this before but have no idea what it means...

I love mine too.... I like them because they stop well and if your thrashing around, you dont have to deal with busted hydraulic lines(I HAVE seen this happen on a ride) and once they are setup, you dont have to really mess with them...

Hey thanks for the analogy to road bikes! Shifting and braking in the same lever? Sounds scary to me! (I'd crash immediately). Thanks for the education on this

I've ridden them, but only on the parking lot. I loved them. I'm hoping on the trail they keep their charm...

you shift by the thumb lever as normal but the brakes instead of only moving towards the handlebars as brakes, they pivot downwards and thats how you shift down

SHARKY has them on her blur

you can also lift the brake lever up and up shift the thumb lever is removable if you so desire and most sets come with a plug for where the thumb lever was...the disadvantage of them is you can shift when braking brake when shifting and I was told you can snap your wrists if down shifting while hitting a bump (I heard a rumor that a class action lawsuit against shimano was filed for this reason)

bb7's are good, less modulation.

crap hydraulics are the worst brakes IMO. i would rather have rim brakes.

nothing beats a good hydro.

I prefer the feel of hydros, but my BB7s are the next best thing.
