I have a question. What would you pay for a Ti 29er frame.
I am trying to decide if I should just buy one or make one. Who would be interested, Who would be interested in a Cromo steel 29er? and what color. I'm thinking candy green. I just want a 29er . ![]() |

I own two. A Niner One-9 full rigid single speed and a Niner RIP. But I still will use a long travel 26er on the knar days.

My next bike will likely be a 4" travel FS 29er since I have no bike between my 6" FS and hardtail and filling the gap for "those" rides would be sweet. There are too many good Ti and steel 29er frames out there already IMHO......the "need" is with 29er FS frames. |

Well I want a ti 29er and If there is other people that would be interested it would be into making some. We have Chumba 29ers in cromo on the way.
But if I could find a price point and its worth it to make some we might just do that . I tested the aluminum prototype it was a blast . |

Cromo steel is OK for some, but most production steel frames are not built with heavy people, like me, in mind. I owned a rigid steel bike briefly and it bounced, flexed at the wrong times and tires rubbed chain stays when climbing. I would consider a custom built steel Singlespeed and have talked to Chunk Rat about building me one.
On a single speed I like them as light as possible therefore Scandium is my metal of choice. On a full suspension, Aluminum works great. Would I like a ti frame? Yes but only because I like the look of raw ti. ![]()

I have 2 29ers. A 3" FS Leviathan and a steel Kona Unit 2-9.
I'm assuming you like the geometry of the Chumba Prototype and are going to copy that? The reason I ask is because I'm always amazed at how different my 2 bikes feel. The Leviathan is a beast that just bashes over the trails, nothing stops it or knocks it off line. I often ride the Main Divide and this bike just murders those steep ups and downs. During the VQ, people would out climb me, but when it went downhill I passed most of them back. The difference in speed and stability between my bike and the 26ers was drastic. It has a 70degree HA and 18.2 Chainstays. The Unit 29 is totally opposite. It's nimble and playful and springy like Tigger. I have had 2 friends ride this bike and they both want to buy one now. It turns with the slightest of lean and lets me get the front wheel up over obstacles with little effort. It has a 72 degree HA and 17.3 - 17.5 chainstays. I ti hardtail would be sweet but I'm sure it would be $$$. I'm still not done enjoying the feel of steel. |

I'd say leave the Ti 29ers to small builders and just focus on bringing normal material (alum, etc) to the masses.
Ti 29ers are pimp for SS (if I rode my SS more and wanted to upgrade I'd go with a Blacksheep fo sho). I also agree with Justin on the 2-3" XC bikes with 29" wheels. I think the Jet9 when it comes out will be big on the XC race scene. I'd LOVE to get one!! Then Justin can have my Dos ![]() |

No need for a ti frame. If like that springy feel go steel. Unlike Fo I can tell the difference in frame materials. But the then again a ride my bikes.
![]() ![]() As others have pointed out there are more HT 29’ers out there than you can swing a stick at. To tell you the truth I do not want to see anymore. The Kool-Aid drinkers in the MTBR 29’er forum start drooling all over themselves when (insert manufacturer here) introduces a HT SS with copied geometry. Make a FS rig!!!! ps. I have not ridden 26" wheels is almost 4 years ![]() |
