I build jumps
|
Well I'm looking for a new frame. I ride mainly XC/AM but I like to hit all the drops and jumps when I see them. My usual trail I ride is about 3-6 miles of uphill dirt and asphalt and then it's downhill through the desert (about 7-15 miles). So I 'm looking for something that can climb and go downhill. I went to adrenaline bikes the other day, and they were really awesome and pointed me towards the Transition Preston FR. It looks like a great frame for what I'm looking for.
Does anyone have any other suggestions for frames to look at? I would like to keep it under $800 with tax, shipping, etc... (poor college student). Thanks guys for the advice. ![]() |

5' 9" with long arms and I like the feel of short freeride necks if that matters. I weigh 185 and I would say my riding style is some what smooth but aggressive (if that makes any sense). Right now I'm riding a Iron Horse Yakuza Bakuto 2006 and I really like it except some trails get a little rough going downhill and some jumps/drops need a little more cushion. |

In that price range, you should definitely check out the Soul Cycles Matador set up in 5" mode with a Rocco R Air. http://www.ridesoul.com/matador I like mine, and it is similar in some ways to the Preston. It has a lower standover, and as such you'll need to run more seat extension than you would on the Preston, but it's also a little lighter. Both bikes are single pivots, they just use different types of linkage, so suspension traits will be similar, though not identical. At the pricepoint you are looking, your options are pretty limited for a brand new quality frameset. One important thing on the Prestons, if you have to choose between an 06 and an 07 or newer, go with the 07 or newer. The reason being is that the leverage ratio is lower which has multiple benefits from quality of travel, to being able to run lighter springs to achieve the same sag.
Good luck with it, Chris |

That was the frame I was looking at, and the tall guy with black hair who helped me was very informative. All the reviews I look at seem pretty good too. My only problem with going a little higher in price is I think I would be better off with a nice fork and say the Preston frame, compared to buying a $1400 frame alone. At least that is what the guy at the shop told me, but it makes sense.
I would prefer to buy new, but if it looked like it was in really good condition I would buy used locally. Here is a link to the Preston for those that haven't seen it. http://www.transitionbikes.com/2007/PrestonFR.cfm Thanks guys for all the advice so far! ![]() |

So if I were to get the Preston frame, I would need to buy a new seat post, head set, and shifter cables (or at least housings)?
edit: Just realized it takes the same diameter seat post I have now. WooT!!! Quote:

![]() I would like something that rides a little "firmer". The Reign is a little too plush on the climbs for me. Of course, a simple upgrade like an RP3/23 would probably solve that problem for me.

Pacman,
While the Transition warranty is 1 year, the crash replacement policy is in effect for as long as you own the bike. I've only seen 1 pic of a Preston with a failure issue, and it was the shock mount on the top tube on the older frame design. Chris |

So I called Adrenaline Bikes today to make sure they still had the frame before I drove 2 hours to the store. Well they said they sold it yesterday...
![]() Anyone else know a good place to go for a deal on a Preston? I called a few places and quotes from $1100-1300, which sucks because Adrenaline wanted $699. |
