Default DT Swiss 5.1d rims

Who's happy with them? Who's not? I'm considering these for an upcoming wheel build, and MTBR has only a few reviews. Was hoping for additional opinions here. Or, if you can recommend an alternative rim in the 500- to 550-gram range, let's hear it. By the way, i'm 195 lbs., no freehucker or anything, but do like plowing through the rocky stuff. Thanks.

They have been flawless for 1.5 years under my 200+lb arse.

Other options:

Stans Flow (I've got these comming on some new wheels)
New Mavic EN521
old Mavic EX321 (rode for a year or 2 with no issue)
Syncros DS28 (like the looks of these best. Also a good performer. Used as a front wheel for a year)

I've been happy with mine. I have them laced up to some Hadley hubs with DT Comp spokes. I like the width (coming from a 4.1), it really rounds out the tires much better, making them feel much more solid in the corners.

Another rim you might want to consider is the Stan's Flow. 470g and add 7g of rim tape if you want to run UST Tubeless. Width looks to be about the same or a little wider than the 5.1d's.

I'll be building up a set of these over this weekend (if my hubs get here tomorrow) and hopefully will be able to get some ride time on them next week.

I like em (5.1s) but honestly, I wish I went with something more robust (just in case). I would recommend the Syncros DS28 over the 5.1s. About 540 grams, 28mm wide and SUPER tall so they are gonna have sweet rigidity on that direction. I had em on my Ventana X-6

Somewhat recently, I built up a couple wheelsets with the 5.1 wheels (one set for my 6.6, and the other is for my play bike). So far so good, but I wouldn't really expect any problems with rims this soon. What's more important than rim choice is wheelbuilder (sorry if you already knew that).

BTW, if you're using Kenda tires, I would suggest not using Velox rim tape, but instead use three wraps of strapping tape. The Velox tape is so thick it makes it more difficult to get the tires on and off. I don't know if this applies to other tires, because I've only used Kendas on these rims. However, I've used Kendas on other Mavic rims with Velox tape with no noticeable difficulties.

DT makes a good product. If you like rock gardens, then you'll love Atomlabs TrailPimps.

If you like rock gardens, then you'll love riding Tunnel or Cold Springs in Santa Barbara. It won't matter what rims you're running if you don't have enough pressure in your tires.

I've had a set on my 6-pack for about 1.5 years with no problems. I'm only 160lbs though and ride all the P-lines.

This should tell you all you need to know, Toby!

If you still want more, though...

My 5.1's are almost 2 years old now, and have stood up very well to some pretty obnoxious treatment. They've needed a couple truings and tensionings in that time, of course, but are still rolling about as straight and stiff as new. An excellent choice.

Oooh, ouch!

I'm running the 5.1's on my Ventana El Terremoto. They are my first set of DT's (running Mavic on all my other rides), but so far so good. I'm 200lbs, but not "too extream" either, so...

Anyway, they've been good to me.

The 5.1's with the DT tubeless setup works great as well. I've never burped a tire. Been running these for over a year now. Zero maintenance and they're still true.

Lots of good intel here. Thanks, everyone. Looks like the 5.1s will be the call, though i might ask the folks at the Path about the Syncros hoops as well.
