Just looking for some suggestions for a new replacement rotor that would work with Avid Juicys?
I had heard good things about Galfer Rotors, but unfortunately every place I have talked to that sells them, is out of the 160mm and don't know when they can get more. This is for the rear and XC use, so I don't feel the need to step up to 185's. Any help would be appreciated. ![]() |

thanks for the quick replies guys.
Shimano center-lock aside, what really is it the makes the rotors compatible or not...just thickness of the rotor itself? Not sure how thick Avid's run have to check it when I get home. Thought I read somewhere they were 1.8mm. I know Magura's run like 1.9 to 2.0. |

As long as you stay away from the "wavy" Hayes rotors (seem to be rather soft and prone to wearing out fast) Most 160mm rotors will work, However, the cheap Shimano 6 bolt rotors are pretty cheap bombproof. The Galfers are extremely trick. Just match up the pad height with the rotor and you'll be fine.
Before you install the new rotor (and pads) make sure an fully re-set the pistons into the calipers, (or wind out the pad adjustor on mechanicals) This will more than make up for a .1mm rotor thickness difference. Also, when you replace the rotors, replace the pads, but before running them quickly "face" them by putting some fine grip sand paper on the bench and cleaning the glaze off the pads. It'll cut down the break in time and help even pad/rotor matching I've looked at the Dirty Dogs and they have a good tall brake surface, and with the fancy machining, you should get some pretty good heat dissipation (Basically what kills your stopping power!) those dirtydogs are pretty sweet, they're getting a bit on the pricey side for me...so for now I will stay away from the bling. Although if they had any gator stylin rotors I could make an exception
Thanks for the nice info biglimey! Yeah I am still in contact with a couple places for the Galfers, but its not lookin good. Just researching other options, and try to get something by the end of the week. |

on the pricey side is a small price to pay for made in USA if that still matters to anyone. Thanks for the link Mosh. I need a new one for my DH bike. That Ace Of Spades rotor has so much white trash trucker style I might just have to have it. lol

Ask CH4OS about the Dirty Dog rotors Skull & Crossbones. He had them installed but they were rubbing, and I think he said they didn't stop as well.
I also saw them on a custom (purple or pink) bike that was in Adrenaline for service. |
