Question HeadseT Squick BS?

yeap yeah I hate to complain again but maybe this is a quick fix that other people have run into before and can help me out!!

I have a 29er Niner that has a Reba fork. CK head set that I've used on the Redline for a while longer before the Niner. Recently I'm getting this noisy squeaky BS that seems to only happen when I put pressure into the bars!! (On the climbs) I clean the thing I try making it nice a tide and even have the pros look @ it and make it work again but the thing just starts with the same BS again.

Questions do many of u Reba and/or CK owners have this lame problem too? Is the CK headset the problem? (I’ve heard some people talk about it). What’s the quick fix? Should I look for a different Head Set brand? What’s good out there? What really works? Should I give a dangg? well, actually I do give a danngg abut this one b/c I don’t want to fudDge the frame up if this keeps going this way.

Help A bRottaa Out mAngg!!! any help would totally rule

You may have more mileage on your setup than mine, but I run the Reba with the King Dread-set on my Dos Niner and don't have any handlebar squeaks. Oh, you probably apply a LOT more pressure SSing and being a guy that is bigger than me

I know it may be a stretch but remove the headset from the frame, clean everything including the head tube and cups.... Apply small amount of grease to the cups before you press them bac in and your noise may go away

I have a CK headset and Reba fork on my SS with no creaking, but I have less than 200 miles on my set-up. I'll definitely keep an eye--or, ear rather--out for it.

I had a squeaks coming from the headset/stem area. I loosed the headset cap and the stem while the bike was on the ground (not on the stand) and then tightened everything up slowly and evenly. Squeaks went away.

I run a reba race and a ck headset on my SS and I haven't had any problems.

Was your headtube reamed for the king headset when it was installed?

Try removing the upper and lover cups and look for and small metal shavings in the headtube or around the bearings and races. Sometimes when a headset is installed the fit is so tight that small amounts of metal can be shaved off and work their way down to the lower bearing and race and start squealing.

Try removing everything including the lower race and put a thin coat of polylube or prep-m on everything and re-install. Wipe off all excess, and ensure that everything is torqued down to proper specs when you re-install.

If that doesn't work try either warrantying it thru CK or buying a replacement bearing kit for it. I have a Cane Creek S-8 you can borrow if you decide to try warranting it, let me know

Previously, I've had problems specific to Rock Shox forks. The stanchions would creek at the crown. I let some green wicking-type locking compound in there, and that solved it.

I have a Reba and CK headset on my singlespeed, and it's quiet.

When I assemble a headset, I put grease everywhere:
- On the steer tube before sliding the race in place
- Between the headset cups and the frame
- Between all races and bearings
- Although I don't typically do this, sometimes you may need to remove the bearings from the cups and apply grease to the inner portion of the cups, then reinstall the bearings. I've only done this when the bearings easily come out of the cups.

As mentioned, also check your stem and bars.

King headsets suck....seriously. it is WELL document that for longer travel forks and singlespeeding, creaking is a big problem (based on its design)....not kidding, they just suck. Cane Creek Solos are far better. I will never buy king again for other than a roadbike, and i dont own a roadbike.

Don't buy anything new until after interbike -trust me on this one.

My CK has never squeaked although friends couldn't keep theirs quiet. Check the rubber o-ring inside the top bearing cap. Is it worn, ripped, still there?

I got a Cane Creek Solos for the wife's bike and was very impressed with it. Got one coming for the new spot as well.
