Default mmmm, a delicious Vanilla Float

Thinking about a Fox Float or Vanilla to upgrade me new Heckler. Can't really decide which one. I will probably get the R version for eithe one because i know i won't use the lockout.

the Float is lighter but the Vanilla has springs and I am a large fella(6'5" 190) who could really use the heavier springs that come with it. Don't know how well the Float will adjust to my weight...

Any opinions about which is better and why?

At less than 200 lbs, you are far from a big guy. An air shock/fork will serve you just fine.

With a Heckler I would look into a beefier fork with a 20mm axle like a Pike or Z1. The difference in stiffness is worth the slight weight penalty. Besides, Fox is overpriced

I have been thinking about shaving some pounds off her so the Float seems more appealing right now. haven't looked at the pike or the Z1 but I don't want to have to buy a new front wheel.

the RLC compression adjust does sound appealing.

there are so many freakin' choices in forks I am having trouble sorting through them all...

TURNERob is there a comparable fork to the Fox Float that is not as overpriced?

i agree. have you looked into the marzocchi 66 line? or maybe the 55 line when they come out. i had an AM1 on my huckler and it was pretty stiff considering it didnt have a thru axle.

not sure of how much she weighs, not too heavy though. it's more or less the AM build that comes from Santa Cruz. probably 32ish?

i guess my dilemma is that the fork on it now is pretty much junk(tora 302 (5.3 lbs!!!) feels like a toy fork) and i could go either direction on the next fork i get for it. either beefier or lighter. i love the possibilities of a 130-140mm fork so i think that has got to stay. i don't think i need 160. i don't really huck. don't want less travel. don't want to buy a new front wheel.

don't ever use the u-turn on the fork now, i want something that i can set up and forget about, cause i know i won't mess with it during the ride...

i am not a weight weenie but changing the fork is gonna have to happen eventually and the chance to save a few pounds off the front end is a good side effect!

thanks for the input guysmuch appreciated!

sorry jeff, here's your float:

I agree with TurneRob. Anything with a QR will still feel like a noodle. A Huckler needs a 20mm through axle fork. Depending on your wheel, you may be able to convert it. What brand hub?

I just switched from a Fox Talas to a Pike on my 5 Spot. The difference in stiffness is night and day.

If you're looking for set it and forget it, I'd get a coil fork rather than air. It will be a little heavier though.

A Pike air will weigh less than your current fork does plus you'll get the added stiffness of a 20mm axle. I would save your money and get a new wheel/fork combo. The deore hub cannot be converted to 20mm so you could sell that to help pay for the new wheel.

I have a PIKE 454 U-Turn, yes, big difference from the Talas RLC I had before, much stiffer.

the Pike really does look like a pretty good fork...been doing a bit more research. i guess i could always have someone swap out the hub for 20mm?

You're light enough to where you could use an air fork. Only go for the coils if you're doing real aggressive riding.

I have Fox forks on most of my bikes, but I have a Pike 454 on my 4x/play bike, and it's really a nice and stiff fork. It really offers features and specs matched by no other fork (that I can think of).
