Default Help me spec my Chumba XCL!

I posted this on MTBR to solicit some advice, but I'm going to post here as well, since the user base knows what our local trails are like.

It was only a matter of time before I had to go out and pick up another bike to add to my personal demo fleet. It's like a disease...

Since I've been very happy with my EVO, I figure I'd stick with Chumba and pick up their XCL - a 5" trail bike. I opted for a medium in anodized black.

Ok - so here is where the real fun begins - what parts should I throw on this frame? I have some answers already, but maybe you guys can throw out some suggestions? I'd like to get this build in the 28-29 pound range without sacrificing too much durability.

The rider and where he rides
I'm 175lbs and I'd like to use this bike for longer epic rides, and maybe some endurance type events (Counting Coup comes to mind).

Parts that I already have
I already picked up a 2008 Fox fork and I'll be using some leftover parts I have in my toolbox.

Fork
2008 Fox Talas 32 R

Stem
Thomson X4 100mm

Handlebars
Any suggestions? I'm looking for something in the 26-27" width range with about 1.5" rise. Nothing too heavy. Needs to be OS since I already have an OS stem. I'm scared of carbon fiber.

Headset
Chris King - I hope this doesn't creak...

Brakes
Deciding between Avid Juicy 7, Formula Oro, or Hayes Stroker Trail.

Drivetrain
I'm pretty much set on the 2008 Shimano XT gruppo(crank, FD, Shadow RD, cassette, shifters). Any reason to go with SRAM instead?

Seatpost & Saddle
SDG I-Beam Seatpost w/ SDG Bel Air SL

Shock
I'd like the replace the DHX with a Marzocchi Roco Air but I can't seem to find one now. Maybe I'll just opt for an RP23 instead?

Tires
Probably Maxxis Ignitor 2.35 UST up front and a Maxxis Larsen TT 2.0 UST in the rear. Or something else?

Wheels
Ok - here is where I'm a little stuck. I'm thinking Hadley's (in silver) with DT Swiss 4.2d's. Or should I save some money and go for the Hope Pro II's instead? Or maybe some other rim? I will be running UST/Tubeless tires. And, most importantly..what color hubs??

Juicy 7's.

Go with silver hubs, or black if you can't get them. Unless you're gonna be adding color somewhere else, then get the hubs to match.

Hubby loves how SRAM shifts. I've got SRAM stuff on my XC bike (Dos Niner) with the X0 components. Never had any issues. I run Shimano XT/XTR stuff on my Enduro and it's good. New DH bike has SRAM x9 and x7, no problems yet. Road bike has SRAM Rival, which I like a lot more than the Shimano stuff.

Probably 6 of 1.

RP23 is a highly regarded shock. If I got a new 5" bike, that's what I'd get.

I'd say get a light wheelset and King hubs, but that's just mean. Not sure what you could get for light weight, the 819's or whatever they are called now might be good. Crossmax SL or XL? Check weight on the SL (if they have requirements). My XL's are on my Enduro and have been great.

Another vote for Juicy 7s, and SRAM all the way.

For my next wheel build, i'm eyeing the Hope Pro II's, in gold. Another option, at a good price, from the Path: http://www.thepathbikeshop.com/pg/catalog/iid/517

Have fun with the build.

now that's a nice Chumba!

Formula! I would have spec'd these out for my wife's bike but no available aftermarket levers as far as I know of. Not to expensive either.

Sram all the way. I dig their stuff, but the new Shimano XT stuff looks great.

get rid of the frame and get 5 spot......

yea right...

i've had good luck with my J7's, but Formulas are getting some hype right now. I like SRAM stuff, but i rode a bike with saint RR and i kind of liked how it shifts with the big lever. Bars, maybe look into sunline? i have a v3 on order right now.. I'd go with rp23 if you cannot get the rocco air yet, i'd like a rocco air tst r personally. wheelset, maybe custom dt 240s with the RWS skewers and 819 rims, dt spokes and nips... your tire selection is sweeeet

I am looking to upgrade to a Roco Air on my trail bike as well. I'm having a hard time trying to find a store that has the size I need.

Beyond bikes is the only site I have found that seems to carry it. Jenson has it but not the size I need.
http://www.beyondbikes.com/bb/ItemMa...SK-MAR-RocoAir

I don't know the reputation of the site but it might be worth a shot. If you do end up going with the Roco, let me know how it rides.

If you can, call ahead and see if they have what you need in stock. Then ask them to hold it aside for you because you are on your way down there. Then drive down, pick it up and enjoy the stock on the wall.

If you like Mongolian BBQ I can suggest a place nearby

RP23 for sure.

Definitely '08 XT stuff. I'm really digging the cranks and shadow der.

For rims, I'd go with Mavic 819's. Neil(1x1Clyde) has 819's with 2.35" Ignitors up front and Larsen TT's on the back of his XCL and likes that setup for OC trails.

The engagement on the Hadley hub felt much better than the Hopes.

For a cassette, the Sram 990 is very nice looking...when it's clean. XT might be a little nicer. I'd keep it all XT for the drivetrain.

Default Roco Air

I've been looking at this shock & it's getting some sick reviews

http://www.ride-this.com/Marzocchi-R...-20280029.html

they have the 7.875 x 2 in stock which I believe is the xcl spec

I think you should go full XTR, brakes, everything! Look sweet against that frame!
Get an Easton Monkey light carbon bar, you won't regret that. If you you can't face it go for a matching Thompson bar.

Wheels have to go for the Pewter King hubs, Rims have to be DT Swiss (Go Ride has builds for around $650 while your buying the shock)

Thanks for letting me spend your money!

I personally wasn't impressed with the Juicy 7's and don't think the Strokers are available yet.

Default A little update..

Thanks for the suggestions and advice so far guys. Here's a little update..

Sorry to all the SRAM fans, but this is what showed up at my house yesterday.

X!

The new XT Shadow Rear Derailleur

I was looking around at the Formula's yesterday and man, and my heart says yes, but my wallet is balking.
There was someone on MTBR selling a set of the Hayes Stroker Trail off his new Reign X that I might think about getting. The price is worth a try at least ($230).

I ordered the Roco Air R from Ride-This yesterday - thanks for the link, Edog. I have a feeling it will probably end up on my Evo instead though. I'll keep looking for a RP23.

And ODB - thanks for the lead on the wheelset at the Path - that's an incredible price - and would save me some time building up a wheelset of my own. I had Hadley's on my Evo and I really do dig the engagement. That's the only thing that the DT hubs don't offer - but heck, they're light and reliable.

On a related note - I've lost Chumbie. After his appearances in the photos yesterday...he is now no where to be found..

For the brakes I'd go with Magura Louise FRs. 7" in front and 6" in the rear. They now come with the BAT system to adjust engagement, they modulate extremely well and have loads of power. Plus they are durable as hell. Plus since they come in grey/black it would look good with your rig. As for a bar you can go with an Easton EA70 Monkeybar or a Titec Hellbent. You could also look at the Maxm MX-6 FRP bar (I think it is kevlar reinforced plastic or fiberglass but not sure) I do know that it is light!

It looks like the 165mm's are backordered at BTI so more than likely, there aren't too many floating out there.
