Default Cassette Question from a non-mechanic

Hi-
I'm in the process of performing your quintesential budget single speed conversion. I'm planning on using a bent XT derailleur, a cheap spacer kit and my existing 20 tooth cog, so....

What tools do I need to remove the cassette, and then break the cassette up into indidual cogs? I know this is a basic question... but thanks!

if your cassette does not have a carrier, all you need is a lock ring tool and a chain whip

Most cassettes have carriers, meaning you cannot separate the cogs from the cassette. You may have to get a conversion kit.

If you're using a hub with a steel cassette body, I'd get a $5 BMX cog. The teeth are taller and non-ramped so the chain will drop less. It'll save you some headaches later. If it's got an aluminum body, I'd spring for a $20 wide base surly cog. Otherwise, if the Cassette has no carrier, you can drill out the pins holding the cassette together and get the cogs/spacers.

Other stuff you'll probably need:

A piece of old shifter cable. Cut it down so the knob end inserts into the barrel adjust end of the rear der. Use this to positon the rear derr. so your chain line is straight. Might need a longer screw low limit screw too fro the rear derr. (maybe).

$5 singlespeed chainring bolts. Not necessary, but looks cooler if you dump the large chainring.

Have fun dude, this will probably the funnest and cheapest bike project you'll ever do!
