Default SingleSpeeds and CK rear hub...

Can I use the my CK rear hub from a geared bike for SSing? Or do I need to get a SS specific hub?
Thanks.

you can use any hub for single speeding...just need spacers

e.g., GUSSET SINGLE SPEED CONVERSION KIT at JensonUSA.com

single speed hubs have the theoretical advantage of being dishless but who cares......the wheel is strong enough for you now so any potential increase in strength is probably a moot point

You can use your CK. Just make sure you buy a rear cog with a wide base, like a Surly, Endless, Chris King or Boone. That'll keep the cog from chewing up your aluminum cassette body.

You'll also need some spacers. You can harvest them from old cassettes, cut some PVC pipe or just buy a spacer kit. The Endless spacers set seems pretty dope. Never tried it though I just use Cassette spacers.

What frame you using? Post some pics of your SS build!

good point about cogs....my example was more to point you to the fact that all you need is a cog and spacers. I too would get one of the aforementioned cogs.

Word. On a steel cassette body like a Shimano. Forgetaboutit, $5 BMX cogs are great. But I'd hate chew up the Al body on a high zoot King hub over b/c I didn't buy a $20 surly cog.

So far so good with the Mavic 719A on the SS. To early to tell on the DT Swiss 7.1. Neither are on the light side, but Tani always remainds me when I forget I weight 220.

personally, i would go with the Stans ZTR Arch 29er though I dont know how manly you are (ie, how much you weigh) in which case I might consider the ZTR Flow 29er.

having said that, i have delgado disc and they have been pretty good so far and the newer rims from salsa are supposed to be even better. hard to convert to tubeless though....if that matters

I am running the ARCHes on my geared RIP with CK hubs and I love this wheel set, pretty light and actually pretty stiff as well. I weigh about 180 without gear.

On my ONE9 I went lighter with the ZTR 355 Olympics and CK hubs.. I am happy here as well... No real issues a little flex here and there but hey it is a rigid SS how fast am I really going to be bombing rocket on this thing...

Bogth set seal extremely well adn I am running Rampages on one and Specialized Resolution/Fast Traxx combo on the SS

I highly recomend Stan's but that is just my opinion
