Default single speed hub and lacing toa geared frame???

hey STR'ers.
ive come to the conclusion that im going to just buy a surly SS hub that allows a freewheel (bmx type) and lace it to my existing mavic wheel for my p.2 street/park bike. heres my question. will a SS hub with 135mm spacing make a straight chainline? wont it be just like lacing a bmx wheel since i dont have to dish for gears? anything to consider? heres the hub:SURLY PARTS!
ill add a 15t or 14t freewheel to go with the 32t front. sound good?

I am not a expert in these matters but a freewheel will totaly limit your ability the adjust the chainline. And freewheels can be a bitch to get off to change cogs.

32 x 15/14 will be good for the flats.

Personally it think your plan needs more work.

yeah, ive swapped many a freewheel in my time, they only get worse with age... remember, this bike will be used strictly for skatepark/street riding, with none if any dirt use at all. say i dont go with a freewheel, is it the same as lacing a bmx wheel?

What are you using for a crank? If it's just a single chainring deal, you can always try mounting the ring on the inside or outside of the arms - and see what ends up working best there.

Or - if the crank uses an external BB - you can try some spacers if the chainline needs adjusting.

I had that same hub before on my Surly 1x1 and the chainline was perfectly straight with my XT crank with 32T chainring mounted on the inside.

what sort of dropouts does your frame use? Are they vertical? if so, you will need to consider (magic link, tensioner, etec.) how you will tension the chain if you go with the Surly hub. If vertical, best option in my opinion is the ENO eccentric rear hub.

as for single speed cassettes....they are for chicks who dont want to break nails when changing gears...c'mon, how often do people change gears anyway? frankly, takes me same or less time to change freewheel with the ACS freewheel remover.. I much prefer freewheel setups and have never had a problem with chainline, but could be some luck involved.

its a specialized p.2 with horizontal drop outs. so tension is no problem. i think i may have just secured a new pair of azonic outlaws anywho..

Matt told be about your classic build, have you posted any pics anywhere?

Here is plenty of warning, make it to my B-Day ride July 22th in Fawnskin and I will stop harrassing you. Better idea than pictures...Grout Bay is very SS friendly bring the new build!

Ryan,

It would work if you went with a profile type crank setup. This way you can use the spacer washers to adjust your chainline within reason. I'm sure you probably know this, but there are tons of 3/4" 48 spline profile knockoffs out there to keep the cost down. Good luck with it.
