Lightbulb Hydraulic Disk brakes

Hey brain trust... i just bought a new bike and have a couple of rides on it... i've already had both wheels off the bike for various reasons.. hate those darn thorns... haha

Question - my front disk seems to be rubbing against the brake pads... the tire will rotate a few rotations before stopping but i think its enough to ask the question - is the disk rotor supposed to be rubbing the pads? any thoughts or insight on how to correct this without taking it to a bike shop??

Thanks!!!

Has it rubbed since new? If not, you most likely squeezed the brake lever with the wheel off. To fix take the wheel(s) off and push the pistons in with a plastic tire lever. Install the wheels and you should be good. Some brakes may require you to pop the master cylinder cap off (make sure it's level and clean first) to push the pistons in.

If it rubbed since new, it's most likely not installed correctly. Depends on if it's post mount or I.S. for the instructions.

A little more info on your situation would make a diagnosis easier.

most likely the piston assembly is out of alignment. all u really have to do is check which side is rubbing and slightly untighten the bolts for assembly and move it the opposite direction from the rubbing side and retighten bolts

Once worn in after a ride or two a disk brake should run free, without rubbing when the bike is in a stand. Most disks will rub when sprinting or during hard cornering.

If you are local bring it by and I will check it for free.

I have had this problem before. Try different positions with your quik release lever first. Some times with will correct the rub.

Also, what brand are you running? Avid, Hayes, Shimano?

A couple things not yet mentioned..If it has been doing this since day 1 then the caliper could be misaligned with the rotor. If not then perhaps the rotor is warped.

Thanks guys for your recommendations... i adjusted the caliper tonight and it seems to have corrected the issue. the wheel now rolls freely... now only if i could blame the rubbing rotor on my lack of endurance up hills... LOL

Glad to hear that everything is good. If you have new brakes they need a few rides before the get broke in and then everything seems to work as it should.
