Default Suggestions for a build

Currently I have an iron horse full suspension. I am going to sell it to my friend so I am in need of a new bike. I thought it would be fun to build it myself. WHat is the cheapest you can build a bike from the ground up?

we need more details before we can offer more helpful suggestions. i.e., what type of riding you are going to be doing? what is your budget?

Cheap parts = big headaches.

Some things you should never buy on the cheap.

Personally if you are going to use Shimano parts, I think the XT is just as good as the XTR if not better. You'll lose some bling factor, but you'll have money left over for more stuff.

Building a bike up is fun, can you save money by doing it, probibly not, unless you have used parts or get busy on Ebay. You can not beat the prices bike companies get on bike parts.

Generally, building a bike up is going to be just as, if not more expensive than buying a complete bike. Take any new, complete bike and add up how much it would be to build that bike up if you bought all those parts seperatley. It's usually close to double the MSRP.

I have built up my last 2 bikes, but only because I have so many extra parts to use, I only had to buy 3-4 parts to finish them up.

My advice is to buy new. You'll get more for your money.

The cheapest way to build a bike is to take the MSRP of the complete bike that has roughly the component level you want and double or triple it.

I have done 3 builds in the last 3 years and each one went over budget.

BTW: Ebay is good for prices but it is killing your LBS

Like Brett(guero) said, we need to know what type of riding you do. Are you going to build a XC hard tail, a FS all mountain, SS, DH? Each has it's price range$.

I also agree with the others. Building a bike can be expensive. I've built 3 in the last year.

Although, I saved some $$ on one build, I went over budget on another. I sold the 3rd and made money on it, but it really only offset the cost of the other. I guess you can say it's a wash.

I also had left over parts to help with these builds which saved me lots of money. How do you get left over parts you ask? By upgrading a bike you already have, then it snowballs from there. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for all your advice. I will probably go with an already built bike to save some money.
