is the 34 front ring that different than using a 33 with a 19 on the rear? I'm thinking of moving up on the front for my next ring but not too sure of the pain!!

Yes different: here is Sheldon Browns gear calculator. And Rabbits Singlespeed and Fixed gear calculator. Needs Java Script installed to run.

Apparently Wipperman superduty chains in black are as elusive as Bigfoot, neither the Path or Jones can get them. Soooo....my options are an Izumi chain in black or a KMC chain in black. Anyone use these? Any options y'all can give? I usually run SRAM in geared rigs but I have heard stories of chain breakage in singlespeed for sram and sh!tmano. (BTW black will match the frame, thus the emphasis on that color)

I run 32:20 on my 26 wheels and I find thats perfect for Orange County. Its too spinny for anywhere flat even if you have uber fast twitch muscles but for almost all hills its good.

Here is a website with some info on SS Conversion. The same site has a Gear calculator so you can mix and match gears. This has helped me with my SS project.

Good luck...

I remember sending you a link to the purple chain.

I am actually kinda staying away from Adrenaline Bike for this build because they don't stock any 29er stuff, and I prefer one-stop shopping.
I am doing a lot of buisness with Jones Bicycles in belmont shore. For their labor rates they are less expensive than The Path and their work is outstanding. (I had the frame swap from my Specalized Enduro Expert to my S-Works Enduro done there). I used to think that they were only a beach cruiser type joint but the staff is always friendly and knowledgeable and they usually don't mind just hanging out with you and talking bikes

Yikes! I am just going by what the guys said when I visited the shop and I asked whether they (you) carry 29er stuff.

BTW is that 29er Mountain suspension forks or 29er (aka 700c) road forks?

no offense, and with all due respect chris, jones blows. the mechanic there named corey is a cool dude, i used to bodyboard with him at seal beach and im sure the other employees are alright. the owner of jones is an ass and runs a frickin' sweat shop, the mark/dollar amount to hit commision there is unobtainable and he treats his employee's like sh!t. if i am desperate i will go there for something, other than that, i steer clear. why do you think they are hiring literally every other week?

neil has been outstanding when it comes to getting anything i need, and the path has been good to me the few times i've been in there. the path, the bike co, and adrenaline all give back to our mt. biking community with cool and fun events to attend, what has jones done for our mt. biking community......exactly, NOTHING! (rant over)

That will be tough! I'd recommend a Hopey damper for steering, it probably saved me from a disasterous crash when my (carbon) handlebar broke. I was able to ride home SS with 1/2 a handlebar. I didn't stand but the damper prevented excessive steering wobble.

BTW In the 2006 Vision Quest there was a rider with one good arm, had both brake levers on one side.

Thanks for letting me know that, it means a lot to me. Giving back to the community and how an owner run an operation is just as important as the quality of the work. I didn't know that the owner of Jones was an a$$.
BTW I wasn't dissing The Path or Adrenaline. I like both shops very much. I was just stating the facts of the matter and looking for feedback.

I was thinking about that. I have an easton aluminum flat bar that is chopped down for xc racing that I am going to try first. I am hoping that the larger wheel mass and smaller handlebar will mean more gyroscopic stability. If that doesn't work then I'll go hopey.

The stability of a bike depends upon the fork trail. Perfectly rideable bikes with zero gyroscopic effects have been built (counter-rotating weight).

For stability I'd use a long bar and long stem.

A 48 inch chain is the minimum It will handle up to 34x24 on a 16.7" chainstay, and your bike is ??

Go with a KMC 1/8" chain.
